AUSTIN, Texas - The Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) has announced the start of the third cadet class at the Texas Emergency Management Academy, a pioneering program unique in the nation.

A new group of 24 cadets has begun an intensive 8-month training course designed to develop the future leaders of emergency management. This thorough program addresses all aspects of emergency management, including preparedness, response, recovery, and hazard mitigation, with graduation anticipated in Spring 2025.

“This cadet class, representing communities from across the state and nation, will spend the next several months honing skills, acquiring knowledge, and participating in activities that will prepare them for futures in the emergency management discipline,” said Texas Emergency Management Chief Nim Kidd. “This valuable ‘boots on the ground’ knowledge from the field and classroom training will better help communities protect life and property in the years to come.”

The Academy offers a demanding curriculum of approximately 1,300 hours of training. This class includes participants from Texas and three other states, with a range of educational and professional backgrounds. Since its launch, the Academy has attracted over 350 applicants from 20 states and 4 countries, and 40 cadets have successfully completed the program.

Upon graduation, cadets will have gained in-depth knowledge and skills essential for effective emergency management, including Texas emergency management laws, planning, disaster finance, resource staging, incident management, and Emergency Operations Center (EOC) response management. Graduates also earn several nationally recognized certifications, such as those from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Professional Development Series, the Level I Professional Continuity Practitioner program, and the National Emergency Management Basic Academy (NEMBA).

In addition, they will become certified basic emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and achieve National Registry Certification upon completion of their training.

The Academy’s curriculum includes hands-on training and classroom instruction from subject matter experts, blending traditional lectures with advanced emergency management technology to provide a comprehensive education.
