Public meeting scheduled to discuss Lavaca-Navidad River Authority water permit application

EDNA, Texas - The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has scheduled a public meeting for Sept. 24, 2024, to discuss a water use permit application filed by the Lavaca-Navidad River Authority (LNRA). The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the Edna High School Auditorium located at 1303 West Gayle Street.

The water use permit is to construct and maintain a reservoir. The reservoir will divert water from the Lavaca-Navidad and divert it to Lake Texana in order to be used for industrial purposes. 240 acre-feet of water will be impounded annually from the Lavaca River in the Lavaca River Basin.

According to the application, the water will be used for municipal, industrial, and mining purposes in five counties, including Calhoun, Jackson, Matagorda, Wharton, and Victoria. The application also includes a request to divert 96,022 acre-feet of water per year from the Lavaca River for use across the basin.

A temporary use of 1,500 acre-feet of water has also been requested during construction.

The meeting will allow the public to submit comments regarding the permit. The session will be divided into an Informal Discussion Period and a Formal Comment Period. During the informal session, members of the public will have the opportunity to ask questions directly to LNRA representatives and TCEQ staff. The formal session will focus on official comments, which will be entered into the public record.
