With a vacancy in District 1 and an upcoming vacancy in an at-large seat, the Cuero City Council will be appointing two replacements.

In District 1, which is the northwest section of town, elected member Greg Freeman moved out of the area, so he had to resign the seat. This was done at the March 11th meeting and applications for the position were accepted through March 28th. Four applicants have shown interest, said Mayor Post Meyers. This appointment will occur at the next regular meeting on April 8.

The mayor’s last council meeting will be in May when she will turn the office over to Emil Garza, who currently holds a member-at-large seat. The council will then need to appoint a new member to fill the vacancy in his position.

Those interested in the at-large position should obtain an application from the city secretary. Council will then interview applicants and decide on an appointment.

The terms for both appointed positions will expire in May of 2025.

The requirements for city council depend on residency and age. All candidates must be 18 years or older. If running for a district seat, the candidate must have lived in it for at least six months. At-large candidates can live anywhere in the city.

Monthly meeting attendance is required. If a member misses more than three meetings, they are disqualified. If possible, members are encouraged to attend business openings.

The council canceled May elections for expiring terms because all positions, including mayoral, were unopposed.

Also, in the upcoming April meeting, the new Animal Control fees are set for a second reading, upon which they will become policy at a date set by council.

Next city council meeting Monday, April 8 at 5 p.m. in City Hall
