Free Meals Program for Wayne County Kids
On Friday, July 26, Southwest Human Resource Agency will welcome parents and caregivers from throughout the area to Wayne County Libraries for their weekly distribution of free summertime meals. The distribution of five days’ worth of breakfast and lunch food items will provide much-needed nutrition for kids and teens, in the absence of the daily meals they receive during the school year.

Lebanon proposal for hundreds of homes near Five Oaks faces intense scrutiny
The Lebanon Planning Commission gave a negative recommendation to a controversial housing development plan that would be part of a golf course community called Five Oaks at an emotional public meeting Tuesday. The Meadows at Five Oaks is a proposal to build 274 homes on nearly 107 acres right by the existing Five Oaks neighborhoods just off Highway 70 and east of State Route 109. Spencer Cancels Water/Sewer Rate Increase
The Spencer City Council amended an ordinance for a planned water and sewer rate increase Thursday. The increase implemented in February, 2023 to gradually increase rates every six months until the city’s utilities were no longer experiencing financial stress. With the change in utility leadership, Spencer Mayor Alisa Farmer said the state suggested the change.

27-year-old Asonte Steele was seen violating her conditions of release by drinking alcohol on July 11th. Offices were responding to a call regarding a potential domestic altercation in progress and made contact with Steele when they arrived. While speaking with Steele, officers noticed the smell of alcohol coming from her....
Christopher Moss punches wife in face multiple times during altercation
49-year-old Christopher Moss was involved in a domestic altercation with his wife, Marketha Mosley, while in a parked vehicle at their Washington Street residence on July 8th. When officers arrived, they spoke with Mosley, who claimed that Moss had assaulted her. Mosley informed officers that she and Moss were sitting in a parked vehicle at the residence, talking about relationship issues. Mosley stated this made Moss angry, causing him to punch Mosley in the face multiple times. After this, Mosley proceeded to exit the vehicle and told Moss she was going to call 911. Moss proceeded to pin her against the car and attempt to grab her phone.
Yesmin Castro assaults ex-girlfriend, tries to take her phone after accusing her of cheating
46-year-old Yesmin Castro was involved in a domestic altercation with his ex-girlfriend, Laura Mendez, at her Clearview Drive residence on July 11th. When officers arrived, they spoke with Mendez, who claimed that Castro, her ex-boyfriend and father to her children, had suspected her of cheating. Mendez claimed that Castro came to her home and tried to take her phone away from her.

Georgia Higley indicted by Grand Jury for shooting weapon into woman’s car
A Montgomery County Grand Jury has indicted 25-year-old Georgia Higley for reckless endangerment and vandalism. The indictment alleges that on or near the date of March 24th, 2023, Higley knowingly and unlawfully shot a weapon into Claudia Colbert’s vehicle, causing $10,000 in damages and placing Colbert in fear for her life.
Northwest High School teacher Sophia Elvilus resists arrest after ignoring officers during traffic stop
24-year-old Northwest High School Spanish teacher Sophia Elvilus was seen in a light blue Honda CRV with a broken brake light on Shanee Terrace on July 11th. When officers conducted a traffic stop and made contact with Elvilus, she expressed that she knew the law and that she was not detained. Elvilus put her hands in her pocket and refused to comply with the officers’ orders. Elvilus then walked toward her car’s driver seat after officers told her to stay out of it.
Austin Peay State University Governors men’s basketball heading to Spain
CLARKSVILLE, TN – For the first time since 2012, Austin Peay State University’s basketball team is hitting the international stage, as it travels to Spain for a trio of exhibition contests, Aug. 4-12. Ricky Riggs steals $2,522 worth of portable A/C Units from Lowe’s
32-year-old Ricky Riggs was apprehended for theft from two different Lowe’s stores between June 8th and July 9th. On July 10th, Shawn Worley, a loss prevention officer at Lowe’s, reported to the authorities that on June 8th, Riggs had stolen from the store. Worley alleged that Riggs had entered the Lowe’s on Lowes Drive, selected a portable Hisense A/C unit valued at $480, and left through the main exit without paying.
