GRAND CHUTE — This wasn’t how the Cumberland baseball team envisioned wrapping up its season.

Facing the No. 1 seed in the WIAA Division 3 state baseball semifinals on Tuesday, the No. 4 seed Beavers were no-hit and suffered a 10-0 defeat in a game shortened to five innings at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

Cumberland (21-9) was making its sixth appearance at the state baseball tournament, and its first showing since 2017.

“That’s hands down the best team we played all year,” Cumberland coach Joe Serbiak said. “And it’s probably not even close, to be honest.”

Aquinas sophomore pitcher Aedan David kept the Beavers off balance all game en route to the 15th no-hitter in state tournament history. David also collected four of Aquinas’ 14 hits and drove in the game-ending run in the bottom of the fifth. He finished with four RBI.

“The game was rough,” Serbiak said. “We weren’t prepared to play that brand of baseball. They pushed us, and we made mistakes. But that doesn’t take away from what our guys have done much of the season, which was pretty impressive.”

The Beavers entered the contest riding an 11-game winning streak. However, they ran into a buzzsaw in the highly motivated Blugolds (24-4), who are trying to avenge a loss in last year’s state title game.

Aquinas advances to face No. 2 seed Kenosha St. Joseph (24-5) in Thursday’s title game.

Cumberland senior Gavin Prinsen took the loss, surrendering six runs (five earned) in four innings. He struck out three.

“Gavin, when he’s really on and when he works ahead in the count, he’s really tough to hit,” Serbiak said. “He’s had some very good appearances for us, but today just wasn’t his best. And that had a lot to do with their very talented offense, which made things difficult.

“We knew their lineup was pretty stacked coming into this game, and we just didn’t have an answer for them today.”
