Tree initiative at Westfield school adds to leafy urban canopy
WESTFIELD — The middle school has planted more than 40 trees on its campus since Arbor Day, and the principal says it’s on track to reach its goal of 50 trees next year. “We actually planted slightly fewer than we originally planned,” said Westfield Middle School Principal Jesse McMillan, adding some will be saved until next spring in order to dedicate the time to ensuring the planted trees’ survival.

Dartmouth Police Apprehended Two People In An Alleged Large-scale Retail Theft Ring In Massachusetts And Rhode Island
Local police have arrested two individuals from Massachusetts on charges of shoplifting. However, it is suspected that their involvement may extend beyond this crime. At around 1:00 p.m. last Friday, the Dartmouth Police were notified of a shoplifting incident at Kohl’s located at 81 Faunce Corner Road. The police have reason to believe that this shoplifting incident is linked to a bigger organized retail crime group.

New Research Suggests Few People Get Sick After Bite from Ticks Infected with Powassan Virus
Scientists at the University of Massachusetts Amherst-based New England Center of Excellence in Vector-Borne Diseases (NEWVEC) have published new findings on Powassan virus, an emerging tick-borne illness that can cause life-threatening encephalitis and meningitis. The study reports that people bitten by black-legged (or deer) ticks that tested positive for the virus did not show signs or symptoms of disease.
