Winter Dominates Gilman in WIAA Opener

Winter WI - The Gilman Pirates travel to the Warrior Dome in Winter Wisconsin for regional opener in the WIAA Division 5 Boys Basketball playoffs.
Gilman enters the game with a 3-20 record as a 14-seed, meanwhile Winter enters the game with a 17-7 record as a 3-seed. The Warriors are coming in hot winning 12 of their last 13 games and putting up a scorching 81.2 points per game.
Winter jumped out to an early 22-8 lead which prompted a timeout by Gilman to find a solution to the full court press by the Warriors. The Warriors kept applying the pressure causing problems for Gilman as they struggled to get the ball over half court. The first half included 7 three pointers coming by way of Adam Bednorski, Gunnar Greuel, and Cole Petit. The Warriors also picked up 20 points in the paint and 8-12 from the charity stripe. The Warriors went into the locker room at half time with a 49-16 lead. The Warriors also forced 22 first half turnovers.
The second half was more of the same while the Warriors unloaded the bench, providing the reserves some valuable WIAA playoff action. The Warriors continued to force turnovers causing 12 additional Gilman turnovers. The second half included 22 additional points in the paint, another 3 triples, and 7 more from the charity stripe.

Gunnar Greuel led all scorers with 28 points, 15 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks. Adam Bednorski added 22 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals. Carter Petit contributed 17 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist, 7 steals, and 2 blocks. CJ Thompson had 10 points, 2 rebounds, 8 assists, and 3 steals. Malte Colliander added 5 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, and 1 block. Cole Petit dropped a 3-ball and picked up 1 steal. Logan Hautamaki added 1 point, 1 rebound, and 1 steal. Dakota Holm scored his first career playoff points with 1 point, and adding 1 steal.
The Winter Warriors move onto round two, the Regional Semi-Final against 6-seed Hurley who beat the 11-seed Mellen Granitediggers by a score of 69-46. Hurley comes into the game with a 15-9 record and finished 3rd in the Northern Lights conference.
On Friday, March 1, Hurley travels to Winter for a 7:00pm tip-off for the Regional Semi-Final game.
