City of McAlester Hosting Pickleball Tournament
The City of McAlester is hosting a pickleball tournament at the Stipe Center in October. The tournament will be a round-robin format with a six-game guarantee. The tournament will be on Friday, Oct. 25th and Saturday, Oct. 26th. The women doubles games will run on from 12 – 6 p.m. The men doubles will play Saturday starting at 8 a.m. and running all day until it is finished.

Who owns Swinging Bridge? Pawhuska council discusses accepting donation of landmark
The Pawhuska City Council voted 5 to 0 on Aug. 13 in favor of determining conclusively who owns a local landmark and tourist attraction known as the Swinging Bridge. The pedestrian bridge, one end of which is located at Kihekah Avenue and East 2nd Street, dates back nearly a century, to 1926. It spans Bird Creek and was originally the primary option for people who wanted or needed to cross the creek into and out of the Pawhuska downtown area. According to a sign placed near the bridge, it was designed by J.M. Buckley, who was the city engineer. The bridge was refurbished in 1970.
Bears Fall at Tulsa in Season Opener
TULSA, Okla. – After lightning delays pushed the season opener to Friday, the Central Arkansas women's soccer team fell in its 2024 debut at Tulsa, dropping a 5-2 decision. The Bears had flashes of really good soccer, but the Tulsa offense found timely goals to control much of the momentum, especially in the second half. Eight Bears made their debut on Friday, including Sophia Backstrom, who earned the game one start, and delivered with her first collegiate goal.

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) says, the I-40 corridor study between Reno Avenue and Hudiburg Drive in Del City is now available. The virtual open house according to ODOT says, materials will be presented at a public meeting on August 22 at the Del City community Center including an update on the upcoming bridge replacement project on I-40 over Sunnylane Road.

Break From The Heat Arriving Soon, Rain Possible Throughout Week
Heat advisories will be posted from near Oklahoma City to McAlester southward for Monday afternoon and early evening, where index values will be from 105 to 109. The heat index this afternoon is expected to be near 99 in the metro but will not trigger any heat advisories or warnings. Actual temps will range from the upper 80s to lower 90s north and the mid 90s south.
