After a tough weekend at the NRGT, the Wildcats had a 3-8 record coming into this game against the Springer Red Devils from Class A District 5. Springer had a 4-7 record this season. Springer beat Questa, 60-36, earlier this season in December. The Red Devils also came into this game with a thirteen-game win streak over the Wildcats.

This is the 74th annual edition of the boys basketball tournament that will be hosted by Espanola Valley High School. All six of the 2A District 5 teams will be in attendance. Here is a look at the opening round matchups and all of the teams that will be participating this weekend.
Big Weekend at the Dual Cities Tourney for District 5 and Escalante rolls over Navajo Pine
Three District 5 teams visited Santa Rosa for the Dual Cities Tournament, and Escalante played on the road at Navajo Pine. Penasco came into this game with a 2-4 record on the season, after a tough outing in Santa Rosa against the Lions within the last week on Friday. Regardless of the outcome of the game last week, Senior Guard Demarcus Lopez must have felt at home in Santa Rosa’s gym. Lopez went off, scoring 38 points for the Panthers against the Monte Del Sol Charter Dragons in the opening game of the weekend. “He couldn’t miss from three…it was something to see,” Penasco Coach Tim Pacheco said of Lopez.

It was a slow week leading up to the Christmas break. Only six games on the schedule to recap. Here we go. The Bobcats played the Lions for the second time within a week; first at the tourney in Tularosa, and at home in Espanola on Tuesday night. The Bobcats came out ready in this one, leading after the first quarter and at halftime, 37-30.
Mora hangs on in Raton, Questa hosts Tourney and McCurdy does work in the Tularosa Tourney
Questa played their first home game of the 2023-2024 season on Monday. The Wildcats got out to a slow start scoring 11 in the first half. In Springer, the Wildcats faced a team that was 2-4 coming into the game but was well tested with a tough early schedule at the Cowbell Tournament. The Red Devils got out to a large lead in the first half and hung on from there. Questa fared better in the second half scoring 25 points.
McCurdy runs it up, Mesa Vista finishes the weekend strong and Penasco wins on the road in OT
After a tough outing against an outstanding ATATC team to open the season, The Panthers welcomed the fellow 2A Dulce Hawks from District 1 to town. The Hawks finished last season with a 16-13 record and a first round loss in the state playoffs against Texico. They came into the game with Penasco with a 2-1 record this season, after a weekend at the Shiprock Chieftan Tournament, in Shiprock.
