Supreme Court denies motion for relief for man who killed 81-year-old Clinton woman
JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – A man sentenced to death for killing an 81-year-old woman back in 2010 will not get another day in court. On Thursday, the Mississippi Supreme Court denied James Hutto’s petition to file for successive post-conviction relief, with the judges saying his arguments were without merit.

Nonprofits can compete for grants in community wide contest

SUMMARY: At an informational luncheon in Tupelo, Mississippi, LEAD (Lee County Empowering, Advancing and Developing) announced that it will provide grants to support nonprofit organizations with new initiatives addressing local needs. Each participating nonprofit can earn $250 for submitting an application, while the top three projects can receive $10,000, $5,000, and $2,500, respectively, and a crowd favorite can win $2,500. Grant winners will be revealed at the “Night for Nonprofits” event on September 30, following an application deadline of August 30. This initiative fosters collaboration among nonprofits and supports essential community projects.

Mississippi man gets sentence nearly tripled by judge after creating commotion outside courtroom
A Mississippi man’s 25-year sentence for attempted murder and attempted kidnapping was nearly tripled by a judge who witnessed the man misbehaving outside of the court. The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports that Amonty Young, 37, of West Point, will now spend 70 years behind bars after he caused a commotion in a holding cell after Judge James Kitchens’ initial sentence in Clay County Court.
