In Michigan’s Aug. 6 primary election, voters must choose which party's candidates to vote for, but they can't revisit their presidential choices. The presidential primaries were held in February. President Joe Biden won the Democratic primary and former President Donald Trump won the Republican race. ...
Dow Receives Large Grant for Job retention
The State of Michigan has allocated a $120 million grant to Dow Chemical to retain roughly 5,000 jobs in the region. During its meeting on Tuesday, the Michigan Strategic Fund awarded the grant to Dow to support improvements to the company’s industrial park in Midland as well as its Auburn Operations facility. Dow says it’s working to expand its ability to manufacture materials that go into the creation of electric vehicle batteries. The State has also approved a 15-year State Essential Services Assessment property tax break and a 10-year extension to a Renaissance Zone tax incentive.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) turns 34 this month, and events are being held across West Michigan to commemorate this milestone. The ADA prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities, including employment, transportation, public accommodations, communications, and access to state and local government programs and services. In Muskegon, Disability Network...
CDC reveals new data on bird flu in Michigan farmworkers as US case count ticks up
Whether it spread from sick cows or sick poultry to people, the type of H5N1 avian flu virus that infected a commercial poultry worker in Colorado earlier this month is very similar to the virus that sickened a Michigan dairy farmworker in May, according to new genetic sequencing test results released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And that's good news, said CDC Director Dr. Mandy Cohen, who visited Michigan this week to...

BIG GOODBYE: National Discount Chain Closing 4 Michigan Locations
I'm afraid I don't have good news for Michigan bargain hunters. After closing 52 stores nationwide in 2023 and announcing in late June 2024 that they'd be closing another 35 - 40 locations, it looks like the hammer has dropped on at least four Michigan stores. It's becoming an all-too-familiar...
‘World’s Deadliest’ Creature Spreading Another Deadly Virus In Michigan
You don't earn the notion of the "World's Deadliest Creature" without some variety in your game. Mosquitos are known for being problematic across the globe, primarily for spreading malaria. However, another virus they carry has seen a recent uptick in case numbers. According to the CDC, regions in the Americas...
Wildfire smoke could throw a small wrench in our weekend forecast
A large plume of wildfire smoke is going to cover our Michigan sky at times over the next week. This smoke does have an impact on our weather here at the ground. Yesterday I wrote how a large blanket of wildfire smoke is now moving over Michigan’s sky. The smoke will make our high sky look hazy and even cloudy. This won’t be a continuous covering of smoke. Much like clouds and rain showers there will be periods when the smoke clears and the sun is strong.
Cherry retailers are booming as growers struggle to hold on
Glen Arbor-based retailer Cherry Republic has built a successful business around a fruit that company President Bob Sutherland calls a “ruby red morsel of joy.”. For Cherry Republic, the tart cherry is much more than a crop, it’s a key piece of the Up North lifestyle that the company sells through its chain of six stores throughout Michigan, including locations in Holland, Traverse City, Charlevoix, Ann Arbor, and Frankenmuth. The stores offer more than 200 products ranging from chocolate-covered dried cherries and cherry candy to cherry summer sausage and cherry-based barbeque sauce. The company, which has 140 full-time employees, also distributes to around 700 stores nationwide.
