    With the goal of increasing awareness and raising funds for those affected by childhood cancer, Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is observed annually throughout the country each September. In Douglas and Coffee County, gold ribbons are now displayed throughout the City of Douglas and Coffee County, and the Childhood Cancer Awareness Group of Coffee County is actively working to promote the cause.

    This weekend, CCA LEO members and other students from the Coffee County School System painted the town gold, decorating local businesses and various locations across Douglas and Coffee County for the month of September.

    This morning, the Coffee County Commission officially declared September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The proclamation states:

    “The Childhood Cancer Awareness Group of Coffee County's goal is to assist children in Coffee and surrounding counties who have been diagnosed with cancer and to increase public awareness;

    “WHEREAS, continued research, new medicines, and treatments are desperately needed for our children, and we strive toward a future in which cancer no longer threatens the lives of our children; and WHEREAS, globally, more than 300,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year, and cancer is the leading cause of death beyond infancy for U.S. children.

    “NOW, THEREFORE, the Coffee County Board of Commissioners does hereby proclaim the month of September as: ‘CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS MONTH.’

    “The Coffee County Board of Commissioners urges all employees and personnel to support our local Childhood Cancer Awareness Group in their efforts to raise funds to assist families in need and increase public awareness of the devastating effects this disease has on children and families.”

    The CCAGCC headquarters is located at 1208 Ocilla Road. Donations of auction items and monetary contributions can be dropped off at their headquarters each day through September 26. Reservations for live auction tables and meal tickets are also available for presale.

    Daily Coffee Press will publish a separate article listing all the events taking place throughout September for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
