Hang in there. Summer is on the downslide. Beat the blues by festing it up this Saturday and enjoy live music throughout Lake County Aug. 16-18.

    Marcus Garvey Fest in Clermont

Molefi Kete Asante, professor and chair of the Africology and African American studies department at Temple University in Philadelphia, estimates that Marcus Garvey may be “the most significant African political genius that has ever lived.”

Read more about Garvey here: From Jamaica's Marcus Garvey came an African vision of freedom

Honor Garvey's memory on his birthday and save some fond thoughts and reading time for James Baldwin — It's birthday this month.

Consider heading to a reggae and soul music fest with local retail vendors, food and drinks, back-to-school giveaways and other fun stuff. Local artists Vicky B & New Wave will join DJs to commemorate Garvey this Saturday, Aug. 17, from 2 to 10 p.m. at 9112 Jack Underwood Road, Clermont. Details: 321-948-6815.

Larry Mangum headlines Trout Lake folk night

A Floridian since 1970, Larry Mangum "is known for his butter smooth voice" as well as his keen observations, Lake Eustis Folk tells us. The local organization has landed Mangum to play Trout Lake Nature Center's concert and potluck night this Saturday.

Trout Lake Nature Center is located at 520 E. County Road 44, Eustis. Details: troutlakenaturecenter.com . Learn more about Mangum at reverbnation.com/larrymangum.
