On Thursday, the Energy Workforce & Technology Council said jobs in energy services sector grew, outpacing 2023 job growth by almost 450 jobs.

In June 2024, the U.S. oilfield services sector saw increased job gains, with an additional 968 jobs, according to preliminary data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, an analysis by the Energy Workforce & Technology Council found. In all the energy services sector currently support 647,636 jobs, the council said.

Nationally, the US economy added 206,000 jobs in June. However, the council said, the unemployment rate climbed to 4.1 percent, the highest level since October 2021. Officials said the energy sector’s growth is notable given the rising unemployment rate.

“This uptick in job growth within the oilfield services sector is a positive indicator for American energy production,” Energy Workforce President Molly Determan said. “Despite economic challenges spanning the national workforce, our sector continues to demonstrate robust growth, driven by advancements in technology and the continued global demand for American oil and gas.”

The council’s analysis found that the top five states for oilfield servicing jobs were Texas with 315,593 jobs, followed by Louisiana (54,078), Oklahoma (49,285), Colorado (26,294) and new Mexico (24,222).

The council said it was continuing to monitor job trends and advocate for policies that support workforce development to ensure the sector can meet future demand.
