Energy solutions provider PowerSecure announced Thursday that it would begin a renewable fuel initiative at its Durham campus microgrid this month.

The initiative, the first step for the Durham site microgrid to use hydrotreate vegetable oil (HVO)as a renewable fuel, is the company’s latest move in its commitment toward innovation and sustainability.

“PowerSecure continues to bring new innovation to our customers with a commitment to a clean energy future,” PowerSecure CEO Chris Cummiskey said. “The use of renewable fuels is a forward-thinking solution with sustainability benefits, including the displacement of carbon emissions. The deployment of renewable fuel at our Durham campus microgrid represents a major milestone for PowerSecure and the energy users and producers we serve.”

PowerSecure said it will use HVO in its PowerBlock generator that is part of the hybrid microgrid. HVO uses vegetable oils and renewable raw materials and converts them into renewable fuel. Unlike traditional biodiesel, the company said, HVO is created using a process called hydrotreatment where oils are treated with hydrogen at high temperatures and pressures. This results in a high-quality fuel very similar to conventional diesel in terms of performance and chemical structure, allowing for seamless substitution without any blending.

PowerSecure said the move is part of its “All of the Above” energy strategy to transform the energy sector with technological advancements and environmental initiatives while maintaining value to its customers and communities.
