On Thursday, First Energy Pennsylvania subsidiary Met-Ed announced it had energized a new transformer at its substation in Lebanon, PA.

The new transformer will enhance service reliability for more than 7,000 customers in Lebanon, North Lebanon Township and West Lebanon Township. Previously, the substation had experienced a transformer failure and could not be repaired. A mobile substation was put into operation to provide temporary service to customers until the new transformer could be installed.

“Resolving this critical issue was a top priority, and we expect this to strengthen the reliability of electric service provided to our Lebanon customers,” John Hawkins, FirstEnergy’s President in Pennsylvania, said. “We engineered a solution, identified a spare transformer with the capacity to handle the electrical load and put our crews to work to safely and quickly install the unit. I am pleased to report the new transformer is in-service and operating as designed.”

Officials with Met-Ed said the substation is particularly important due to the underground distribution network it supplies electricity to. That network powers much of downtown Lebanon, officials said. The new transformer was energized in late July. Since then the mobile substation has been disconnected and is ready for deployment. The company said it plans on making more investments in West Lebanon, including installing another new transformer within the next two years.

The work is part of Energize365, a multi-year grid evolution program focused on transmission and distribution investments to deliver power to FirstEnergy customers. The planned $26 billion in investments through 2024 and 2028 will create a more secure grid that will meet and exceed reliability targets and accommodate the transition to clean energy sources.
