Off-duty Kane County deputy involved in fatal shooting in Elgin Monday
An off-duty Kane County sheriff’s deputy was involved in a Monday shooting in Elgin that left one person dead, officials confirmed on Tuesday. The Kane County state’s attorney’s office did not release the identity of the deceased or the deputy in a Tuesday morning news release. The...
A nod to the past
Two disparate ideas entered my mind recently. The first is a suggestion for Democratic political convention delegates. Why not reintroduce the charming tradition of nominating a “favorite son?” The Illinois delegation could nominate JB Pritzker as a favorite son and our neighboring states, acting as good neighbors, would “temporarily” back him for the presidency. Then all those states with Hyatt Hotels could see backing JB as the nominee as a shrewd business decision. No harm, no foul. Bye-bye, Joe.
Americans starting to wake up?
Are the American people finally beginning to wake up and challenge the idea that America is not fundamentally a racist nation?. Even liberal comedian, Bill Maher, says that “wokeness has become a hyper focus on race and racism ….an emphasis that has gone from helpful to harmful.”. Just...
Another RBG moment
The Democrats are having an RBG moment. They could have put another Democratic judge on the bench during the Obama administration when Dems had the Senate. Because of loyalty, sentimentality and arrogance, they did not ask/insist that Ruth Bader Ginsburg resign while there was a chance to replace her with another liberal justice. When available, Republicans took every opportunity to stack the court. They did, and they are winning. Now we have an incumbent Democratic president who cannot win this election. Because of loyalty, sentimentality and arrogance, he refuses to step down, in spite of urgent calls from his own party.
NASCAR piece was an insult
I was angered by the NASCAR opinion piece in the Herald. I am not a big NASCAR fan, I mostly watch Formula 1 and IndyCar, but … here goes:. I suppose he/she/they will get away with the obvious slur “Bubbas’ — is the writer aware that Bubba Wallace, a Black NASCAR driver, is heavily sponsored by a large Chicago company (McDonald's)? Did the writer intend to insult none other than the legendary Michael Jordan — Wallace's team owner? The blatantly obvious “regional racist” intones convey the impression that the Northern states' view of sport is superior to that of the South. Is the writer aware there are a significant number of motor racing fans in Chicago? Are only the Cubs, Bears, or Bulls worthy of attention? What about other sports or teams in Chicago that draw even smaller crowds than NASCAR, are they thus even less worthy of attention?

Music Review: Phish rock out with energy and urgency on their 16th studio album, ‘Evolve’
There might never be a more apt title for a Phish album than “Evolve,” the jam masters’ 16th studio album and first in over four years. Just as this boundary-pushing quartet has progressed over four-plus decades by fusing rock, jazz, bluegrass and other freewheeling sounds, “Evolve” has a familiarly amorphous feel.

Music Review: In a new expanded collection, how much of John Lennon’s ‘Mind Games’ is too much?
The new remixed and expanded “Mind Games: The Ultimate Collection” is for those John Lennon fans who really, really love his inconsistent 1973 record of the same name. The problem is, many Lennon fans would rank the original “Mind Games” fourth or fifth among his most beloved records. Not that the fourth-best John Lennon album is bad or anything, it’s just that “Mind Games” has to have a special place in your heart to make the new “Ultimate Collection” worth it, which is available in two- or six-disc editions.

Book Review: Kate Quinn returns with ‘The Briar Club,’ a murder mystery during the 1950s Red Scare
If you’ve never read a Kate Quinn novel, there’s no time like the present. Or like the 1950s in Washington, D.C. That’s the setting for Quinn’s “The Briar Club,” which is a murder mystery wrapped up in the stories of multiple women who rent rooms at a boardinghouse during the height of Sen. Hospitals stop functioning as Israeli forces pound Gaza City
Hospitals in the northern Gaza Strip are struggling to treat patients and offer desperately needed medical services amid Israeli operations in Gaza City, according to local officials and hospital administrators. The resumed military offensive, which forced tens of thousands to flee, has sown chaos among sick and injured Palestinians, as the city’s remaining medical facilities have been caught up in Israeli-ordered evacuation zones while others struggle to get fuel and medical supplies.

Book Review: ‘Loving Sylvia Plath’ attends to polarizing writer’s circumstances more than her work
A popular form of writing nowadays is one that involves reexamining the lives of people, often members of marginalized groups, who have otherwise been flattened or shortchanged by history. How has society’s assumptions or prejudices informed how a person is remembered, many authors are asking, and what information is available...
