Donating blood is fast and easy — plus, you can save lives and significantly impact local families in times of crisis and beyond. I look forward to seeing members of our community come together for this event.”

Coffee Talk
The Des Plaines History Center will host its July Coffee Talk program at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 12, with “Jules Verne & H.G. Wells, and the Birth of Sci-Fi.”. These two men, Jules Verne and Herbert George (H.G.) Wells, largely thought to be the creators of science fiction, are largely unknown quantities beyond their names and a few of their most well-known imaginative tales. While there is no doubt that they deserve lasting fame for their amazing accomplishments, there were other contributors to what was then termed “scienti-fiction.” And those select few, who were able to imagine the world we now inhabit and beyond, live on in their stories.
A simple recipe for Caesar salad on its 100th birthday
It's 100 years since the Caesar salad was invented, it's said, on the Fourth of July at a restaurant in Tijuana, Mexico. And it's had staying power. The original is credited to Italian immigrant Caesar Cardini, who tossed it in the dining room of his restaurant, Caesar's Place, in 1924. Since then, the salad's been flexible enough to accommodate a wide variety of toppings and ingredients.

Gasoline tax math does not add up
“The extra 2 cents means a typical driver will pay $184 more a year, hitting low- and middle-income families hardest, the IPI noted.”. At 2 cents a gallon, a driver would have to buy 9,200 gallons of gas a year, which is over 177 gallons of gas a week to pay $184 more a year. Another way of looking at it, is that at about $4 a gallon, this low- or middle-income driver is spending $37,000 a year on gas.
Time for young people to step up
This letter is directed to the young people of the United States. Please wake up and look around at what is happening in the United States with the presidential race. We have two of the most underqualified people running for president of the United States. They, like most politicians in Washington, are past their times. They are concerned with their own agendas, not with moving the States ahead and keeping with the times.

Joyful ‘Ain’t Misbehavin’’ a fitting tribute to jazz master
The first Chicago-area production of the Fats Waller revue “Ain’t Misbehavin’” I saw was in 2008 at the Goodman Theatre, co-starring the inimitable E. Faye Butler. By then, Butler had already earned five of her nine Joseph Jefferson Awards and was about 25 years into a career that spans four decades to date. Butler added directing to her resume over the last few years and it’s in that capacity that she returns to Drury Lane Theatre to helm its jubilant revival of “Ain’t Misbehavin’,” the jukebox homage to seminal 1920s and 1930s jazz pianist/composer/entertainer Thomas “Fats” Waller, the stride piano virtuoso whose compositions number in the hundreds and include such standards as “Honeysuckle Rose,” “This Joint is Jumpin’,” “Keepin’ Out of Mischief Now” and “Handful of Keys.”
