Chicago Dogs offense never comes around, dropping the finale in Lake Country, 6-4
Pitcher Kenny Serwa, coming off of a 9-strikeout performance, couldn’t quite replicate his previous work, lasting for just 3⅓ innings. Serwa gave up five runs on eight hits before handing the ball over to the bullpen. The Dogs lost to Lake Country 6-4 on Thursday night on the...

‘Dandelion’ strums a slow, sweet tale of indie music dreams
One wants to give the benefit of the doubt to “Dandelion,” a sweet, slight, impressionistic character study of a struggling musician with a luminous KiKi Layne at its center. The second feature written and directed by Nicole Riegel (after 2020’s “Holler”) is as handmade as the personal signatures in the end credits and as beautifully brooding as a movie can be with a score and songs by Bryce and Aaron Dessner of the indie rock stalwarts the National. Does it add up to less than the sum of its parts? Certainly. But the parts are lovely enough to sustain the indulgent viewer.
Talking to your teen about alcohol
For many parents, navigating conversations with their child around alcohol can feel overwhelming, but they don’t have to be. One of the most important things is starting the conversation early. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends parents and guardians consider beginning talking about alcohol at age 9. This is because between 9 and 13 years of age, children start to think positively about alcohol without being aware of the possible negative consequences surrounding its use and abuse.
West Chicago Mexican Independence Day festival canceled
Organizers of West Chicago’s annual Mexican Independence Day celebration have canceled this year’s festival. The September event traditionally features a parade, mariachi and a giant piñata. But due to other commitments by the festival organizer, the Mexican Cultural Center DuPage, there is “not sufficient time to plan a safe and successful event,” the group said in a joint statement with the city.

Eva Longoria on mastering Castilian Spanish, working with Carmen Maura on ‘Land of Women’
Eva Longoria is not one to shy away from a challenge. Charting her return to television, Longoria decided it was time to do something new: tackle a dual English-Spanish role. “If I’m going to return to TV, I want it to be different, and I want to be challenged, and I want people to see me in a different way,” Longoria said about why she wanted to star in the Apple TV+ series “Land of Women.”
AT&T says hacker stole data on ‘nearly all’ of its wireless customers
A hacker accessed and downloaded call and text-message data from nearly all AT&T Wireless customers, the company disclosed in a securities filing Friday. The breach covers calls and texts made from May 1 to Oct. 31, 2022, as well as this past January. The stolen data include numbers customers called or texted and their duration, but doesn’t contain the content of those communications, AT&T said. The company said it doesn’t think the records are available online.
Reflections and lessons learned on anniversary of cyclist’s death
July 10 marked the second anniversary of a crash I find hard not to memorialize. Nancy Nozicka, pedaling the St. Mary’s Road shoulder near Libertyville, a frequent route for her — not even a mile from her home — was killed by a motorist drifting right. A...
Republicans are gathering in Milwaukee to nominate Donald Trump again. Here’s what to expect
For all the usual stagecraft, the Republican National Convention that opens Monday is different from Donald Trump's previous nominating affairs. In 2016 and 2020, Trump was the underdog heading into fall and faced criticism from within his own party. This year, he will accept the Republican nomination with his party in lockstep behind him and Democrats in turmoil over President Joe Biden's viability.
More than 6 in 10 U.S. adults support protecting access to IVF, AP-NORC poll finds
WASHINGTON — Relatively few Americans fully endorse the idea that a fertilized egg should have the same rights as a pregnant woman. But a significant share say it describes their views at least somewhat well, according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

"WHEN YOU SEE A PICTURE OF JESUS CHRIST"
"When you see a picture of Jesus Christ, just glancing at it, you will in time remember it and what he stands for. You will realize that all the pain, suffering, torture and eventual crucifixion on the cross at Calvary was the fate that he chose as "The Son of God" so that the "Sins" of man could be forgiven!
