Across the country, the fentanyl epidemic devastates communities as drug overdoses continue to skyrocket. According to recent data , fentanyl is now responsible for nearly 70% of opioid-related deaths. Addiction doesn’t discriminate — it can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, race or socio-economic status.

Many of us know someone who has struggled with substance abuse, and it can be difficult to know how to offer love and support to those battling addiction, without enabling destructive behavior.

As a licensed clinical social worker who specializes in treating those with addiction, here are my tips for supporting loved ones on their journey to recovery.

    Educate yourself

Understand that addiction is a disease, not a reflection of someone’s character. For those who haven’t struggled with addiction, it can be difficult to understand. By learning more about drug use and the underlying psychological conditions, physical factors and circumstances that can contribute to addiction, you can approach the situation with more empathy.

    Set boundaries and be compassionate

Supporting someone on their journey to recovery doesn’t mean that you have to tolerate harmful behaviors. Setting clear boundaries allows you to protect your mental well-being. Communicate your boundaries firmly, yet compassionately. Make it clear that your limits are not coming from a place of rejection, but to create a healthier dynamic for both of you.

Encourage them to seek professional help

Recovery is complex and often requires medical treatment, counseling or rehabilitation. Encourage your loved one to seek professional help, whether it’s through therapy, addiction treatment programs or support groups. At Cornerstone Healing Center and across the Valley, there are various treatment options for patients to receive the care they need in a safe, structured and nurturing environment. To learn more about what treatment may be right for your loved one, reach out to a licensed professional.

    Practice patience

Recovery is often a long, non-linear process. It can feel discouraging, but there may be relapses or setbacks along the way. It’s crucial to remain patient, recognizing that it takes time and effort to recover. Celebrate small victories and continue to offer encouragement.

    Take care of yourself

Supporting someone with an addiction can be emotionally exhausting. Ensure you have your support system in place, whether through therapy, support groups or trusted friends. You can’t pour from an empty cup — prioritizing your well-being will allow you to better support your loved one.

Addiction recovery requires love and support while setting clear boundaries. By showing compassion and advocating for professional help, you can help your loved one take the first steps toward recovery.
