HTL: Zack Peterson drives in five as Jefferson outslugs Albion, 9-6

EDGERTON — Zack Peterson and Brandon Laesch had three hits apiece as the Jefferson Blue Devils beat the Albion Tigers 9-6 at Albion Park on Sunday in Home Talent League Baseball action.

The Blue Devils (2-0) totaled 17 hits with Peterson, the team’s left fielder, driving in five runs.

Laesch led off the Jefferson second inning with a double to left. He took third on Kasey Morgan’s one-out single and scored on a line-shot single to right from Peterson to give the Blue Devils the lead for good, 3-2.

Tyler Butina singled and scored on Thomas Schlesner’s fielder’s choice in the Blue Devils third. With the bases loaded and two outs, Peterson plated a pair on a single to make it 6-2.

Peterson did more two-out damage in the fifth, driving in Laesch on a single.

The Tigers (0-1) tallied four singles against Jefferson starter Ike Roth in the fifth, scoring four runs to pull within 7-6.

Jefferson’s answer was prompt, scoring twice with two away in the sixth. After Roby Schlesner reached on an error at shortstop, Heath Renz produced a fly-ball triple to right to chase starter Charlie Hatlen. Laesch singled next for the final margin.

Roth pitched six innings, allowing six unearned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts, one walk to earn the decision. Renz was credited with the save, fanning seven with no walks over three innings of two-hit ball.

Jefferson hosts McFarland next Sunday, then travels to face Fort Atkinson on Monday, May 27.
