Roby Schlesner had three hits and drove in the go-ahead run as the Jefferson Blue Devils outlasted the Fort Atkinson Generals 6-3 in 10 innings at Jones Park on Monday.

The rivals, who both entered unbeaten in Sunday League action, traded single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

HTL utilizes the Major League Baseball rule of a runner getting placed at second base to start extras. For Jefferson, that was Reece Fetherston, who advanced to third on Kasey Morgan’s ground out.

Schlesner dug in next, singling to left field on an 0-1 pitch to bring Fetherston across. Cam Wolter’s error at first base followed by Brandon Laesch’s single loaded the bases. After Luis Serrano popped out, Zack Peterson drew a six-pitch bases-loaded walk.

Spencer Wade and Haygen Miller followed with back to back RBI singles as the Blue Devils pushed their lead to 6-2.

Fort struck back in the home half of the 10th as Drew Dunkleberger plated Isaac Seavert on a base knock to center. After Skyler Schmuck’s sacrifice bunt, Heath Renz got Braedon Sayre to ground out and Kroix Kucken to fly out to end it.

Renz pitched 4 2/3 innings of two-hit ball in relief, striking out four with no walks in the decision. Ike Roth started, allowing two earned on five hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Kucken started for the Generals, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits with five punch outs in six innings. Austin Paul allowed three unearned runs on five hits in four frames and took the loss.

The Blue Devils (3-0, 2-0 division) took advantage of three walks in the fourth inning, with Schlesner coming across on a one-out wild pitch to open the scoring.

Branden Zastrow lined a double to right field with two outs in the fourth for Fort (2-1, 2-1). Jake Hansen, who was 3-for-4, delivered a line-shot single to left, with Zastrow scoring from second without a play at the dish.

Morgan singled with two outs in the Jefferson fifth. He took second on a passed ball and came around on Schlesner’s liner to left for a single.

Cole Bovre opened the Generals’ fifth with a single and took third on Dunkleberger’s double to left. Schmuck’s run-scoring ground out then made it 2-2.

Renz entered with men on first and second and one away in the sixth, punching out Wolter and Bovre swinging to end the threat. The first 11 hitters Renz faced did not reach base. That stretch included a lead off single in the ninth by Hansen, who was thrown out by Morgan in left trying to stretch the hit into a double.

On Sunday, Jefferson travels to face Utica and Fort hosts Evansville. Both games start at 1 p.m.
