    Vote now for the Daily Leader Athlete of the Week from March 4-9

    The spring sports campaign gets into the outdoor season this week with a scheduled baseball game for Pontiac at Metamora. However, indoor track and field has been taking place to provide a respectable list of candidates for the Daily Leader Athlete of the Week honor for the week of March 4-9.

    Each week, the Daily Leader nominates a group of stars and you get to go and vote in our poll. The voting at pontiacdailyleader.com ends at noon on Friday.

    Coaches may email Erich Murphy at emurphy@gannett.com to submit a potential nominee who can be placed on the ballot.

    Mikayla Chambers, Dwight

    Chambers won the 400-meter dash in 61.31 seconds and was second in the 800 run at 2 minutes, 30.13 seconds at a meet hosted by Bradley-Bourbonnais. The field was made up of a majority Class 2A and 3A athletes.

    Fernando Daily, Aidan Lee, Cam Fenton and Jake Dewald, Pontiac

    This quartet combined to win two races at the Rantoul Invitational, held at the University of Illinois. They won the 4x400 in 3:37.42. They took the 4x800 in 8:27.98.

    Maria Long, Pontiac

    Long placed second in the girls' long jump with a mark of 17 feet, 4¼ inches at the Rantoul Invitational meet at the University of Illinois.

    Jaden Lucas, Pontiac

    Lucas took second in the girls' 800-meter run with a time 2:30.03 at the Rantoul Invitational meet at the University of Illinois.

    Graham Meister, Dwight

    Meister placed first with a push of 50-7 in the shot put at a meet hosted by Bradley-Bourbonnais. The field was made up of a majority of Class 2A and 3A athletes.

    Jeremy Melton, Pontiac

    Melton set a school record in the high jump at a meet at ISU before he competed at the Rantoul Invitational meet at the University of Illinois. His record leap was 6-7 at Horton. He placed second at The Armory with a mark of 6-6.
