HERSCHER— Dwight was unable to fend off Herscher as the host Tigers rallied to edge the Trojans 8-7 in a nonconference baseball tilt Thursday. The game was moved from Dwight to Herscher due to wet grounds at DTHS.

The Trojans got on the board with two runs in the top of the first and did not trail until the final batter of the game. A one-out double in the last of the seventh drove in the game-winner for Herscher.

DTHS had led 6-2 through three innings after a four-run outburst in the top of the frame. Ryan Bumpous singled in the go-ahead run in the Dwight third, and Joey Starks lofted a sacrifice fly. An error two batters later brought in two more runs. A Terry Wilkey double put the Trojans up 7-4 in the fifth inning.

Herscher rallied, tying the game in the sixth before winning it in the last of the seventh.

Wilkey and Gallet each had a double and single to pace the Dwight (0-2) offense. Owen Dunlap, Bumpous and Will Trainor each singled. Tracer Brown had two runs batted in while Bumpous, Starks and Wilkey each had one RBI.

“We have played two quality teams and did a lot of nice things. We just did not execute down the stretch,” DTHS head coach Jerry McDowell said.

Gallet took the loss in going the distance. He yielded eight runs (five earned) on 10 hits and two walks. Gallet fanned six.

Manteno 7, Dwight 4 — At Manteno, Dwight opened its baseball season with a setback to Manteno on Tuesday. The big inning was key. DTHS plated four runs in the second frame for a 4-2 lead. The Panthers pushed across five in the fifth for the win.

Evan Sandeno had a ht and drove in two runs to pace Dwight's attack. Owen Dunlap and Joey Starks each singled.

Will Trainor took the loss for the Trojans (0-2), allowing five runs (three earned) in four-plus innings. He fanned four and walked three. Terry Wilkey finished up, giving up two runs in two innings. He struck out three, and each hurler allowed three hits.

Metamora 8, Pontiac 3 — At Metamora, Pontiac got the early jump but couldn't keep host Metamora in check as the Redbirds rallied for the nonconference victory on Monday. PTHS head coach Adam Lawrence was careful with his pitching staff in the season opener for Pontiac as he used four hurlers.

Indiana-bound Henry Brummel was pretty sharp as he gave up two hits and two walks in two scoreless innings. He set down five on strikes and left with a three-run lead.

Aaron Verdun drove in Zechariah Landstrom with a bases-loaded single with two outs in the top of the first. Jacob Fogarty lined a single that plated Landstrom and Tommy Oestmann for a 3-0 lead in the third.

Metamora rallied with three runs in the home-half of the third then plated three runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth.

Nolan Mennenga took the loss after giving up six runs (four earned) in one-plus innings. Mason Schlosser allowed two unearned runs and fanned two in 2 2/3 innings while Landstrom struck out the only batter he faced in the sixth inning.

Henry DeYoung allowed two runs on three hits and a walk and fanned four. Drew Lauritsen finished up, giving up three runs, one hit and five walks. He struck out one.

Henry Brummel singled for the lone Pontiac safety.

Collin Hartman took the loss, allowing 10 unearned runs while fanning four in 2 2/3 innings. Brandon Holland struck out two and allowed five runs (one earned).

Marquette 8, Lexington 5 — At Lexington, a three-run eighth inning lifted Ottawa (Marquette) past host Lexington in the season-opener for both teams on Monday. The Minutemen had tied the game at 5-5 when Braeden Barber belted a three-run homer in the last of the sixth inning.

Barber had a homer, double and drove in four runs for the Minutemen. Drake Powell collected three hits while Blaine Friedmansky and Preston Wiltz each singled.

Canden Hardman took the loss on the hill, giving up four runs (three earned) in three innings. He struck out two. Friedmansky gave up two runs and fanned five and Powell allowed two runs (one earned) to go with two punchouts.

Henry-Senachwine 6, Lexington 5 — At Lexington, Henry-Senachwine added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning, and it paid off as Lexington scored in the bottom of the frame to end up one run shy in a nonconference tilt at Keller Park.

The Minutemen led 2-1 after the first inning and 4-2 after two. The Mallards tallied three in the third and led the rest of the way.

Wiltz started and fanned two while giving up a run in one-plus innings. Jaxson Goodrich took the loss for Lexington (0-3) after yielding 10 runs (six earned) and striking out three over the final three innings.

GSW 7, WFC 6 — At Gardner, Woodland-Flanagan-Cornell tried to rally late but a five-running from Gardner-South Wilmington doomed the Warriors in a nonconference tilt Friday. WFC led 4-2 before the Panthers scored five time sin the last of the fourth inning.
