Avery Scheuer has been a solid contributor at the plate to start the 2024 softball campaign, which has helped lead the Dwight catcher to be voted the Pontiac Daily Leader's Athlete of the Week for the week of March 18-23.

Scheuer had a good week at the plate as Dwight swept Henry-Senachwine. Her big hit was a two-run homer that lifted the Trojans in the extra-inning win in Game 2. She had three hits and three runs batted in in that game. Scheuer added a hit and RBI in the first contest.

Scheuer brought in 284 votes, which was 49.13 percent of the overall total on the Athlete of the Week poll this week. Dwight softball teammate and ace hurler Taylor Heath received 118 votes (20.42 percent) for second. Pontiac pitcher Henry Brummel was close behind in third at 111 (19.2 percent) votes. There were 578 votes cast.

The rest of the nominees were Woodland-Flanagan-Cornell softball players Olivia Chismarick and Shae Simons, shot putter Graham Meister of Dwight and thinclads Marcus Czapar and Aubrey Phillips of El Paso-Gridley.

Each week we nominate a group of stars and you get to go and vote in our poll. The voting at pontiacdailyleader.com ends at noon each Friday. You can email Erich Murphy at emurphy@gannett.com by 9 a.m. each Monday to submit a potential nominee who may be placed on the ballot.
