Opportunities for area athletes to excel were limited last week as rain washed out most events set for Friday and Saturday. However, there were plenty of events that did take place to create a strong list of candidates for the Daily Leader Athlete of the Week honor for the week of April 29-May 4.

Each week, the Daily Leader nominates a group of stars and you get to go and vote in our poll. Coaches may email Erich Murphy at emurphy@gannett.com by 9 a.m. each Monday to submit a potential nominee who can be placed on the ballot.

Voting ends at noon on Friday.

    Izabelle Behrends, Prairie Central

Behrends registered the lone first-place finish for the Prairie Central girls’ track team at the Illini Prairie Conference meet. She won the 300-meter low hurdles in 48.5 seconds. She was also second in the 100-meter highs at 17.56 seconds.

    Luke Gallet, Dwight

Gallet collected two home runs, added a double, two singles and 13 RBIs to help Dwight’s baseball team post a 4-1 record for the week. He also registered seven strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings on the hill.

    Rylee Galloway, Prairie Central

Galloway was the offensive leader for Prairie Central’s softball team with four doubles, five singles and eight runs batted in.

    Jaxson Goodrich, Lexington

Goodrich collected five base hits – two doubles and three singles – while driving in eight runs for Lexington’s baseball club.

    Averi Jury, Dwight

Jury had a big week at the plate for Dwight by belting three home runs, adding a two-base hit and a single. She also drove in five runs.

    Elena Krause, Pontiac

Krause has been the focal point of the Pontiac softball team, which is to see after her week at the plate and in the circle. She had a double, four singles and drove in four runs at bat. She twirled 21 strikeouts in 13 innings pitching.

    Maria Long, Pontiac

Long was the top performer for the Pontiac Township High School girls’ track team at the Illini Prairie Conference meet at PTHS. She came in first in triple jump with a mark of 35 feet, 1 2/3 inches. She also tied for second in the long jump with leap of 17-1½.

    Jeremy Melton, Pontiac

Melton has been the leaping leader for Pontiac Township High School, showing once again his prowess by winning the boys’ high jump after clearing the bar at 6-5. He was third in the long jump with a mark of 20-4.

    Morgan Seggerman, El Paso-Gridley

Seggerman stroked a home run, added a double and singled four times while driving in a pair of runs for El Paso-Gridley’s softball team. All this came out of the leadoff spot.
