Find out who won Daily Leader Athlete of the Week poll for Sept. 16-21

An athlete from Pontiac and an athlete from Prairie Central accounted for nearly 90 percent of the total vote tally for the Athlete of the Week honor.

Caiden Schulz of Prairie Central was the top vote-getter in being named the Pontiac Daily Leader Athlete of the Week, which covered Sept. 16-21. He edged Pontiac’s Peyton von Holten as the two ran away from the rest of the field.

Schulz accounted for 20 of Prairie Central’s points in a 49-0 football win over Rantoul. Schulz scored three touchdowns and added a two-point conversion. Schulz scored on a 1-yard run, caught a pass for a 47-yard touchdown play, and returned an interception 60 yards on defense for a TD. He opened his scoring by throwing a two-point conversion pass to Will Skala.

Schulz brought in 21,453 votes, which was 54.29 percent of the overall total on the Athlete of the Week poll this week. PTHS golfer von Holten chimed in with 14,065 votes, which was 35.59 percent. Prairie Central’s Tucker Stoller and Jules Woodrey placed third and fourth, respectively. Stoller had 2,188 (5.54 percent) votes and Woodrey had 1,024 (2.59 percent) votes. There were 39,519 votes cast.

Also nominated were Brooke Burger, Olivia Lindsay and Elena Krause of Pontiac, Lexington’s Avery Poppe, Eddie Lorton of Fieldcrest and Dwight’s Ayden Collom.
