The regular season has ended and the fall sports season is now in full playoff mode. Here is a look at the nominees for the Daily Leader Athlete of the Week for the week of Oct. 21-26.
Each week, the Daily Leader nominates a group of stars and you get to go and vote in our poll. The voting at pontiacdailyleader.com ends at noon on Friday.
Coaches may email Erich Murphy at emurphy@gannett.com by 9 a.m. each Monday to submit a potential nominee who can be placed on the ballot.
Owen Adams, El Paso-Gridley
Adams accounted for 191 yards and all three touchdowns as El Paso-Gridley kept Clinton out of the playoffs. Adams threw for 46 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 145 yards and two TDs in the 21-14 victory.
Hudson Ault, Prairie Central
Ault registered 196 yards and a touchdown in his final regular-season home game against Central Catholic. He raised his career-record rushing mark to 3,349 as the Hawks enter the Class 3A playoffs.
Brooke Burger-Olivia Masching, Pontiac
Burger and Masching finish 1-2 in doubles play at the state tournament. The PTHS team won its first match over a Wheaton Academy duo but lost in the second round to the Chicago (University) team. The University team finished in second place. Burger and Masching bowed out with a consolation loss to Metamora.
Trinity Cheek, Pontiac
Cheek was a force in helping Pontiac win two of three matches for the week. She collected 20 kills, and a pair of ace serves on offense while making five blocks and eight digs on defense.
Evan Cox, Dwight
Cox has emerged as another weapon in the Dwight football arsenal. He accounted for all three scores for the Trojans in their playoff-clinching win over Ottawa (Marquette). He rushed for 110 yards and two TDs while hitting Drew Anderson on his lone pass for a 31-yard touchdown. Cox was also the leading tackler on defense.
Riley Johnson, Pontiac
Johnson completed his football career with a 177-yard effort in a 20-14 Pontiac win over Bethalto (Civic Memorial). Johnson had a touchdown in the win and rushed for more than 320 yards in his final two games.
Ben Melchers, Pontiac
Melchers completed his sophomore season on a high with 115 rushing yards and a touchdown in a 20-14 win over Bethalto (Civic Memorial). On defense, he had a team-high six tackles and recovered a fumble late to preserve the victory.
Avery Poppe, Lexington
Poppe recorded 29 kills in three HOIC tourney matches in helping sixth-seeded Lexington place fifth. She also had 28 digs on defense.
Alix Robinson, Pontiac
Robinson had a solid all-around effort as Pontiac won two of three volleyball matches. She chalked up 15 kills and three ace serves on offense to go with five blocks and 14 digs on defense.
Vivian Wright, Lexington
Wright was a top server and defensive specialist in helping sixth-seed Lexington place fifth at the HOIC volleyball tournament. She had five aces and registered 48 digs.
