Armored truck robbed at gunpoint outside Philadelphia

Two men armed with long guns robbed an armored truck outside Philadelphia , authorities said Wednesday.

The suspects sported colored visibility vests when they held up the Brinks truck at an AutoZone in Chester on Tuesday afternoon, the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement. The ambitious robbery occurred less than a mile from Chester Police Department headquarters.

One man wore a bright blue vest with “PUBLIC SAFETY” on the back, while the other suspect wore an electric green vest, according to photos released by the district attorney.

The two suspects made off with hundreds of thousands of dollars , local ABC affiliate WPVI reported. Their exact haul was not determined.

The attackers assaulted the Brinks truck driver and stole his weapon , authorities said. However, the driver survived the attack.

Both suspects fled with the money in a black Nissan Pathfinder with a paper laminated Pennsylvania license plate LLN-2328, according to police.

The suspect vehicle is routinely seen in Darby Township and Chester, cops said. Both communities sit southwest of downtown Philadelphia, with Chester farther away at about 10 miles from the city center.

The Tuesday morning robbery was the third time in the past year that multiple people have attacked an armored truck in the Philadelphia area, according to WPVI. Most recently, three suspects attacked a Loomis truck security guard in the city’s West Oak Lane neighborhood in March, assaulting the driver and making off with $2,500.

In October 2023, two suspects shot a Brinks truck driver in South Philadelphia and snatched his weapon and a bag of money, police said. No arrests have been publicly announced in any of the three robberies.
