Fire Police Officer Struck Dead In Line Of Duty, Newberry Township Police

A volunteer fire police officer was struck dead in the line of duty, Newberry Township police announced at 8:32 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 16.

A coroner was called to the intersection of Red Mill and Corn Hill Roads in Newberry Township at 2:45 p.m. on Friday, as we initially reported, but hours later we learned the officer was struck at 2:20 p.m.

"The fire police officer was directing traffic at the intersection following a separate vehicle crash in the area," the police noted adding "Due to the circumstances of this incident, Newberry Township Police requested the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) be the lead agency for this investigation. Newberry Township Police are assisting the PSP as needed."

Deputy Coroner Michelle Rau responded to the scene to investigate and certify the death. The volunteer fire police officer was pronounced dead at 2:27 p.m. An autopsy is scheduled at Lehigh Valley Hospital at 8 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 19.

The statement from the police continues as follows:

"Today’s incident is a tragedy in our community. Volunteer emergency responders are a crucial part of public safety system for our community. They selflessly volunteer their time on a daily basis knowing the risks associated with their tasks. On behalf of Newberry Township Police and the Department of Public Safety, we express our deepest gratitude to the fallen fire police officer for their service to our community. Furthermore, we offer our sincere condolences to the family and all of their fellow first responders during this tough time. At this time, Newberry Township Police Department will not be releasing further information on this incident."
