Special Olympic Athlete Joseph Maccagnano, Hoboken Native, Dies At 58

Joseph Maccagnano, a longtime Hoboken resident and Special Olympian, died on Saturday, Aug. 17 at the age of 58, according to a fundraiser set up for funeral expenses.

Maccagnano worked at Hudson Community Enterprises in Jersey City for 27 years and competed at the Special Olympics for 40 years, being named Athlete of the Year in 2019, according to his obituary at the Jorge Rivera Funeral Home.

Known as "Uncle," Maccagnano also bowled for the Ability League at Hudson Lanes.

"He loved being a torch runner with the North Bergen Police Department and was well-known for his bright spirit and his way with the ladies," the GoFundME campaign reads.

"Joseph was an active member of the Wednesday night program and Active Day of North Bergen. His sister Dorothy cared for him with all her heart and is devastated by this loss."

As of Tuesday, Aug. 20, the fundraiser has raised more than $1,400.

Maccagnano is survived by his sister, Dorothy and other family members and friends, according to his obituary.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, Aug. 22, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Jorge Rivera Funeral Home in North Bergen.
