Speed is believed to have been a factor in an afternoon crash that left a driver in Fairfax County with critical injuries, police say.

Officers were called around 1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26, to investigate a single vehicle crash in the area of Route 1 and Janna Lee Avenue in Mount Vernon, which left one person with serious injuries.

According to a spokesperson from the Fairfax County Police Department, the driver - identified only as an adult man - was rushed to the hospital by paramedics in life-threatening condition.

The initial investigation determined that excessive speed was a factor in the crash.

Late on Thursday afternoon, the condition of the driver was unavailable as the agency's Crash Reconstruction detectives continued to investigate the incident.

Motorists have been advised to avoid the area.
