Fire event encourages young women to explore a career in wildland firefighting
PALO PINTO, Texas – Texas A&M Forest Service hosted the third annual Sisters in Fire event Sept. 30 at Worth Ranch, a Longhorn Council BSA property. The Pewitt Brahmas have been a team in search of consistency – showing flashes of what could be, but running into a wall of late when it comes to gaining and maintaining momentum. Friday, it was the Redwater Dragons who maintained momentum, spoiling Pewitt’s Homecoming by picking up a 56-30 win. For one team, it was an opportunity to bounce back from two losses and kick off their attempt to defend their district title. Some prognosticators picked the Daingerfield Tigers to finish second in district going into the season, giving an already proud team more ammunition in their quest. Cousins help Omaha landmark celebrate a century
The Omaha Methodist Church has new owners and a new purpose, but the new owners hope the building will remain a part of the fabric of Morris County for years to come. Lily and Joe Svrcek and their cousins, Patty and Phil Marraccini recently purchased the building and hope to make the facility the community can enjoy for celebrations and events. NTCC Men’s Rodeo Team wins the first rodeo of the 2023-2024 season
, The Northeast Texas Community College Rodeo team headed to the first National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) Southern Region Rodeo hosted by Panola College September 22-23, and the Men’s Team returned to campus as Champions of the Rodeo. The Men’s team was led by Coy Evans (Fort Supply, Ok) who finished 1st in Tie Down Roping, 8th in Team Roping, and second place in the All-Around Cowboy standings. Brahmas fall in district opener at Hooks
, The Pewitt Brahmas hoped to kick off district play by kicking their losing streak to the side. Unfortunately, the Hooks Hornets controlled the action from the start, negating any flashes shown by the Brahmas as the Hornets won, 47-6. The Brahmas were hurt by turnovers as well as the Hornet rushing attack. Keyshawn Walls finished with 201 yards rushing and three scores. Hooks had two defensive touchdowns on the night, returning an interception and a fumble for scores. Mustangs fall in district opener at Harmony
It wasn’t the opening to district play Hughes Springs hoped for as the Mustangs fell on the road at Harmony, 39-6. The Eagles scored all 39 points in the first half as they took a 39-0 lead into halftime. Brady Hill scored three times and Wesley Sweaney scored twice. Harmony also benefited by going 6-10 on third downs. The Mustangs scored with eight minutes left in the game off a two-yard plunge by Tanner Westmoreland. Westmoreland had a 51-yard catch and a 23-yard catch from Hayden Smith to set up the touchdown run. Smith completed all three of his passes for 76 yards – all to Westmoreland. Braxton Pieffer- Smith finished with 30 yards on the ground. The Mustangs will play at home for the first time in district play as they take on neighbors Daingerfield Friday. The Tigers are 2-2 on the season and had their bye Friday.
DLSISD recognized students showcasing ‘the TIGER way’
The Daingerfield-Lone Star ISD school board welcomed a new member, recognized outstanding students from the first month of school and examined some of the district’s transportation needs during their monthly meeting, held Sept. 18. The board kicked off the meeting by recognizing the Students of the Month (see page 2) as well as honoring Daingerfield FFA students Tyson Hughes and Arryanna Evans. Hughes was a finalist for the Star Greenhand Degree Award in agribusiness at the State FFA Convention and Evans advanced to state in prepared public speaking at the state convention after finishing first at the Area 6 Degree check.
