Daingerfield City Council approves new tax rate
The Daingerfield City Council passed the city’s new tax rate during a special meeting Sept. 19, but not everyone wanted to do so. The board approved an ad valorem property tax rate of $.41974, representing an increase of 24.12 percent from last year’s rate. The vote was 4-1 for the rate, with councilman Mike Carter voting against the rate. “I don’t see how we can raise taxes and sewer taxes 19 percent over two years on the people of Daingerfield,” Carter said. “I think we need to look at the expenditures and see where we can try to do better.” Carter said he...

You are not insignificant
Ah, isolation—a word that sounds as heavy as the burden it describes. Have you ever felt like Elijah under the broom tree, praying for relief and asking God to take away the loneliness? I see you, friend, and I know your weight. Life gets complicated and heavy, and we might feel alone. The Prodigal in the Pig Pen Imagine the prodigal son, crouched in a pig pen, counting his losses. He’d run so far from home, banking on self-sufficiency, only to find himself knee-deep in mud and misery. He felt abandoned, isolated—cut off from life itself. But then, the Scripture says, “He...

Mustangs fall in Homecoming game against Jefferson
The aim for the Hughes Springs Mustangs Thursday was to play hard, battle to the end and hopefully, send the Homecoming crowd home happy. Thursday’s opponents, the Jefferson Bulldogs, had their own aims. The Bulldogs, playing their first full game in two weeks after storms canceled their matchup last Friday against DeKalb, used a balanced offensive attack and an opportunistic defense to spoil Hughes Springs’ Homecoming festivities as Jefferson won, 64-0. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 34-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back as Jefferson finished with 346 yards on the ground and 224 through the air, holding the...

Riders ‘out-half’ Tigers
, , As the Daingerfield’s Tigers walked onto Roughrider Field Friday night, they were facing the #1 scoring offense in Texas 4A, Div I and Div II alike. With 198 total points in the first three weeks, Center had scored 21 more points than the next highest team, Chapel Hill with 177. That makes it easy to explain the shock felt by Center’s players and fans as the first half closed with a zero on the home side of the scoreboard. “ We’re used to 24 seconds and a score,’” press box spotter Ward Herndon said. “But 24 minutes? Something ain’t right.” The...

Fixing engines of the heart
The other day, I spent time on the street with homeless friends, laughing with some, challenging others with their belief in Christ, and talking openly about life and choices. I saw a man hovering under the hood of the not- sonew truck across from the shelter, and it was apparent the truck had seen better days. I caught myself watching, caught myself knowing, caught myself getting some money from my wallet, and parked my SUV. I walked to where he sat on the curb, chatting with one of my homeless friends. I asked, “ So, what’s wrong with your truck?” He explained truck- engine...

The NTCC Women’s soccer team began their conference campaign with a lopsided 17-0 loss on Friday day to nationally ranked Angelina College. Coach Jon Evan said, “ To the credit of the group, we came out and battled hard with energy and enthusiasm before the low numbers, extreme heat, and our strong opposition were too much to overcome”. Goalkeeper Taher Evers was on her toes all night facing 30 shots on goal and recording 10...
Mustangs fall at Leonard, take on Jefferson Thursday
Younger than they have been in recent years, the Hughes Springs Mustangs find themselves having to learn as they go under a new coaching staff. The Mustangs have taken their lumps but refuse to back down in the face of adversity. Hughes Springs hit the road traveling to Leonard Friday, but the Tigers opened the game on a 41-0 run on their way to a 55-20 win over the Mustangs. The Mustangs racked up 280 yards on the ground and finished the game on a 20-7 run, but could not overcome a 34-0 deficit in the first quarter. Braxton Pieffer-Smith, Tanner Westmoreland and Kaleb...

Lightning strikes
An old adage states, “it’s not the size of the dog in the fight; it’s the size of the fight in the dog.” Apparently, the adage is also true for Bears – at least for Timpson Bears. Daingerfield, ranked eighth in 3A Division II, saw that first hand as the Tigers fell in a clash of the titans against class 2A Division I’s top-ranked team, 33-26. The Bears benefitted from the return of Terry Bussey from an injury as last year’s Mr. Texas Football scored the game winner with four seconds left in the game, the final strike in a fireworks-filled game –...
