Book Sale The Hughes Springs Area Public Library is holding an ongoing book sale during library hours. Suggested donations are one dollar per hardback and twenty-five cents per paper back book. Roceeds will be used for the library activities and supplies. Brahmas fall to Winnsboro in season opener
The Pewitt Brahmas looked to open their season with a home win over Winnsboro a year after suffering through one of the program’s toughest seasons. Unfortunately, the “rugged Red Raiders” lived up to that billing as they won the season opener at Brahma Stadium, 59-6. Winnsboro finished with 366 yards on the ground and 244 yards through the air. Quarterback Kyler Finney threw for 244 yards and three touchdowns – two to Camden Capehart and one to Tristan Smajstrla. Longtime owner of The Naples Monitor dies at 85
Morris Garland Craig, a name synonymous with The Naples Monitor newspaper for 67 years, passed away Saturday, August 19, 2023, at his home in Naples at the age of 85. Craig was born December 24, 1937, in Douglassville, Texas, to Hardman Craig and Dovie Lee Kennedy Craig. A celebration of life service was held Saturday, August 26, 2023, at the First United Methodist Church in Naples with Dr. Chas Carlisle officiating. DLSISD examines options for scoreboard at Mickey Mayne Stadium
The “eyes of the Tigers” could see a new scoreboard at Mickey Mayne Stadium in the future. Representatives from ACE Sports visited the Daingerfield- Lone Star ISD school board meeting last Monday presenting options for a possible new video scoreboard at Mickey Mayne Stadium. ACE Sports, based in Little Rock, has provided video scoreboards to high schools and colleges, including Liberty- Eylau High School, West Orange-Stark High School and Abilene Christian University. STAAR scores show continued struggles in math, reading
Texas public student scores in standardized testing continue to improve since the pandemic, but more than half of those taking the test still struggle with math and just under half read below grade-level, the Texas Tribune reported. Students in grades three through eight took the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness tests in math and reading last spring. The results were released last week by the Texas Education Agency. Daingerfield man arrested in shooting
A Daingerfield man was arrested Aug.17 in connection with a shooting in Omaha the same day. Jerry Wayne Satterfield was arrested by Morris County deputies near his home in Daingerfield and taken to the Morris County Jail. Satterfield was arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon F-2 and bond was set at $15,000. At 6:04 p.m. Aug. 17, Morris County Sheriff ’s Department officers responded to a call of shots fired at 400 White Oak Ave. in Omaha. The caller told the department the shooter left the scene in a 90s model Ford Truck. MCSO Sgt. Kellie Hooper along with officers from Texas DPS and the Lone Star Police Department located the victim, Stephen Babcock, who had been shot in the back. Babcock was taken to an area hospital for treatment. The weapon believed to be used in the shooting was located and seized for evidence. Officers with the Daingerfield and Naples police departments assisted in the investigation.
