Lone Star council discusses tax rate, city positions during monthly meeting
The city of Lone Star took steps to remedy several matters, including filling several city positions, at City Hall during their monthly city council meeting Aug. 17. The council proposed a property tax rate of $0.47300 for the upcoming budget year. While the rate does not increase, it does represent an increase. MCC Job Fair Thursday morning
The Morris County Collaborative will host a job fair from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at the MCC Building at 200 Jefferson Street in Daingerfield. Employers set to attend include Daingerfield-Lone Star ISD, Pewitt CISD, Texas Parks and Wildlife, TRMC, UT-Health Pittsburg, Diamond C Trailers, TDCJ, the City of Daingerfield, NTCC, Texas Bragg Trailers, Ardent Health Services, Workforce Solutions of Northeast Texas and more. “ We expect that the Job Fair will be a success and will greatly benefit the companies as well as prospective employees”, said organizer Tolita Teddleton.
Daingerfield puts eyes on the Tigers Friday
, , The eye of the Tiger made its 2023 debut as Daingerfield held its annual Meet the Tigers event at Mickey Mayne Stadium Friday afternoon. The public got a chance to see the Tiger football, volleyball and cross-country teams as well as the cheerleaders, band and Tiger Belles in preparation for the 2023 fall seasons. The Tiger football team scrimmages at Atlanta tonight. The Lady Tiger volleyball team will travel to Harts Bluff Friday. Tiger cross-country opens their season Aug. 26 in Longview.

VanDeaver to speak to Morris County GOP on Monday
State Rep. Gary VanDeaver will speak to the Morris County Republicans at their regular meeting at 6 p.m. Monday in the fellowship hall of Lone Star Methodist Church, 818 N. Main St., Lone Star. VanDeaver, R-New Boston, will address issues the Legislature faced in its recent sessions, including property tax reform and border security measures. The retired school administrator has announced a bid to seek a sixth term as Texas House District 1 representative. The program this month will begin a Primary 2024 series that the Morris County Republicans will present over the next few months. Plans include hosting other GOP candidates for the District 1 seat and offering local voters an opportunity to meet each hopeful individually and ask questions in preparation for the March 5 primary. Daingerfield volleyball drops season openers, plays in Chisum Tourney
The Daingerfield Lady Tigers volleyball teams traveled to Redwater to open their 2023 season. The varsity squad fell in three sets, 25-16; 25-13; and 25-17. La’Nyecia Lewis led the team with five service points. As a team, the varsity squad showed improvement with each set, with several sustained volleys. The JV1 fell in straight sets, 25-20 and 25-13. Chrishlyn Boyd led the team with seven service points, including two aces. The JV2 squad also fell in straight sets, 25-9 and 25-15. The team was led by Tiara Hooper with six service points and two aces. Despite the loss, all three teams showed improvement during their games. The Lady Tigers fell to Detroit Friday, 3-0: 25-13, 25-12, 25-11. Daingerfield also played in the Chisum Tournament, dropping games to Trenton, DeKalb and Bells.
Mustangs scrimmage New Boston last week
, The Hughes Springs Mustangs took the field for the first time under new head coach Joshua Willis this past Friday when they scrimmaged at Mustang Stadium against New Boston. The Mustangs gained experience in their first action of the season against another team. Hughes Springs travels to Pewitt Thursday for both teams’ final scrimmage before the regular season.
Tigers scrimmage at Grand Saline
, , Daingerfield traveled to Grand Saline for the year’s first scrimmage last Thursday. The Tiger starters scored twice against the Indians in the scrimmage portion and came up with an interception in the live quarter while the Tiger JV scored once in their scrimmage. The Tigers scrimmage at Atlanta Thursday evening (Aug. 17).

Aug. 2 crash leads to traffic signal repairs near US Steel-Lone Star
Crews are working to conduct repairs at the intersection of US 259 and FM 729 in Lone Star after a Wednesday morning crash resulted in the destruction of a traffic signal pole. Work at this intersection will include the reconstruction of the traffic signal foundation and the pole, and could take a few weeks. In the meantime, traffic on FM 729 approaching U.S. Steel must stop and yield to traffic on US 259. Temporary signage is in place at this intersection to warn motorists of the temporary change. Please use extreme caution in this area. Be mindful of other motorists along with TxDOT crews and contractors that will be working on these repairs.
