The start of school is fast approaching and local schools and community entities are helping parents and students get ready for the 2023-24 school year. For those still in need of school supplies, the BUDDY (Brothers, Uncles, Dads Developing Youth) Organization of Northeast Texas will hold its annual school supply giveaway Saturday July 29 starting at 9 a.m. at Daingerfield City Park. 8U Lady Mustangs complete undefeated championship season
History can be made at any age – an adage learned by the Hughes Springs 8U softball team recently. The team was one of two local teams to advance to the Ranger Softball state championship tournament, held recently. Joining Hughes Springs was a team from Omaha. Also represented at the tournament were Simms, Palestine, Huffman, Rio Vista, Shelby County (Center), Shelby County West, Delta County, Franklin County, Dayton and Idabel. Their season may have ended earlier than hoped, but the Hughes Springs Lady Mustangs still impressed eyes across the state. Four Lady Mustangs were named to the recently announced Blue Bell/Texas Sports Writers Association all-state softball teams. Named to the first team was senior centerfielder Emma McKinney. Making the second team at designated player/designated hitter was sophomore Shae’Leigh Johnson. Honorable mention players were senior second baseman Madison Heller and senior catcher Riley Lowery. Hughes Springs ISD discusses proposed 2023-24 budget
The Hughes Springs Independent School District is preparing for the start of the new school year, beginning with setting up the budget and tax rate for the 2023-24 school year. The board discussed a possible new tax rate with preliminary estimates based on figures from the state and appraisal districts. The Daingerfield City Council examined several facets of the city’s future during their monthly meeting held July 10. The board heard from CPA Mike Ward about the city’s audit for 2020-21. The city received a clean, unmodified opinion on their audit, meaning no issues were found. Approximately 27 percent of the city’s fund balance is unrestricted. AUSTIN — As the Texas population continues to boom, TxDOT is drafting a record-breaking 10-year transportation plan and now the public is invited to weigh in on the projects proposed in their communities. Known locally as a steady, consistent baseball player, Hughes Springs’ rising junior Trenton Pemberton was recognized by the Texas High School Coaches’ Association, named to the organization’s Class 3A Super Elite Team, announced last week. Texas drawn hunt program opens for 2023–24 season applications
New hunting opportunities and scenery are available to hunters this fall through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s (TPWD) drawn hunt permits program. The program, which issues permits for drawn hunts on both public and private lands throughout Texas, is now accepting applications for a shot at almost 10,000 permits in more than 60 high quality hunt categories. Among the offerings available through the Texas Public Hunt System are hunts for white-tailed and mule deer, pronghorn, turkey, alligator and dove and guided packages for exotic species and bighorn sheep.
