Hughes Springs pitcher Pate signs with Arkansas Rich Mountain
It wasn’t very high on the list of what Hughes Springs senior Maggie Pate was looking for in a college, but it also didn’t hurt that her eventual choice shared its school colors with her high school alma mater. “I can keep my letterman ( jacket) and all my normal clothes I wear every day,” she said with a smile. “I don’t have to get new outfits.” Pate signed her letter of intent Wednesday to continue her softball career at the University of Arkansas Rich Mountain, located in Mena, Ark., during a signing ceremony in front of friends, family and her Hughes...

Another year of anxiety?
Anxiety often feels like a storm raging in our minds. Picture dark clouds gathering, thunder rumbling, lightning flashing–it’s like being caught in a whirlwind of worry, and the tornado of chaos takes over. Anxiety thrives on our fears, the endless what-ifs, and those daunting worst-case scenarios. What if I can’t meet my financial obligations? What if my health takes a turn for the worse? What if I’m not able to support my family? What if my loved ones are in trouble or someone stops loving me? How will I manage? What will I do? That’s when I hit pause and talk to myself....

A Wasp, Two Hens, and a Special Moment
One of my longtime friends, who walks a million miles around Texarkana and strolls long ways to reach her destinations, spoke to me without me starting the conversation. I’d stopped to pass out socks the other day to some homeless friends when she asked me for something. She had never asked me to do anything for her - although I’ve had the pleasure of giving her hats, blankets, and gloves over the past few years. But on that day, she asked for two frying hens. Now, she’s not homeless but does come from a humble setting where she lives with relatives. So I...

Both teams looked to finish strong and it looked like overtime would be necessary. Elysian Fields took a three-point lead late, forcing Hughes Springs to get down the court quickly. Lady Mustang Diamonique Bowles fired up a shot at the buzzer, hitting nothing but net and...

Better Business Bureau (BBB) advises consumers to plan ahead when traveling this holiday season. “Despite higher gas prices and airfares, there will be extra levels of congestion on the roads and in the air this holiday season,” Mechele Agbayani Mills, President and CEO of BBB Serving Central East Texas said. “So it’s very...
911 Call if you can
A recent incident in New Boston has brought the ability to text 911 back to the forefront with a renewed interest in spreading the word about its availability. The Ark-Tex Council of Governments introduced Text 911 in Bowie, Cass, Morris, Red River, and Titus Counties back in 2018. From that time, mobile phone users in the area have had the ability to simply send a text when they are in an emergency situation and might not be able to make a call. The incident in New Boston involved a local official who found herself face to face with a dangerous individual and...
