Waterfowl hunters play major role in helping prevent spread of invasive species
AUSTIN – Waterfowl season is on the horizon and as hunters across the state start prepping their gear and boats for opening day, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) reminds them to join the fight against the spread of aquatic invasive species like giant salvinia and zebra mussels. Hunters play a pivotal part in preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species. By taking a few minutes to clean, drain and dry their boats and equipment, including decoys and other hunting gear, before traveling from lake to lake, hunters help keep these species from establishing new homes. Aquatic invasive plants can easily...

TxDOT appeals to Northeast Texas motorists to wear seat belts and slow down as we approach grim anniversary

As we approach the 23rd anniversary of daily deaths on Texas roadways, the Texas Department of Transportation appeals to all motorists to protect themselves and their families by wearing their seat belts and not speeding. “Last year, 47 percent of motorists who died on roadways across the Atlanta District were unbelted,” said TxDOT Atlanta District Engineer Rebecca Wells. “Seat belts greatly enhance your chances of survival if you’re involved in a crash.” The Atlanta District includes Bowie, Cass, Camp, Harrison, Marion, Morris, Panola, Titus, and...

Marketplace Issues
High inflation rates, price increases, and limited supplies could induce some additional stress this holiday shopping season. This creates an environment which makes us prime targets for dishonest dealers who know shoppers are on the hunt for the right gift at a good bargain. BBB reminds consumers to take the time to make educated decisions before making a purchase, particularly when shopping online. “Many shoppers are planning to start early this year,” Mechele Agbayani Mills, President and CEO of BBB Central East Texas said, “So, it’s a good idea to be on the lookout for dishonest individuals and companies well before...

A tough season continued Friday as Hughes Springs fell at home to Elysian Fields, 26-0. Lady Mustangs prepare for playoffs
Hughes Springs’ Mallory Biddy (left) and Maggie Pate (right) jump to make a block during a recent game. The Lady Mustangs stretched their win streak to three last week and would clinch second place in district with a win this past Tuesday over Sabine. If Sabine won Tuesday, the Lady Cardinals would clinch second by virtue of sweeping the Lady Mustangs. If Hughes Springs finishes second, they will most likely take on West Rusk in the bi-district round. If they finish third, their likely opponent will be Troup.

From death row to life
An inmate gave me a view into death row ... and beyond. A few years ago, I met an inmate who once sat on death row. Years prior, his sentence was changed from death row to life in prison, and it happened about ten minutes before he was to go to die. Now, that’s something that takes my breath away! What grace he received due to a set of unexpected circumstances! First, our thoughts might process the ‘if he should have received the pardon,’ but I must remember that grace and mercy from Jesus come to those He calls, not those I’ve...
