Daingerfield Bee
FFA Forestry Team
On April 20, five members of the Daingerfield FFA traveled to Nacogdoches to compete in the Texas FFA State Forestry CDE (Career Development Event) Contest which was held at Angelina National Forest. The forestry contest is intended to create an awareness and understanding of the value of properly managed woodlands and to promote a greater appreciation of woodlands as renewable natural resources. The event is designed around curriculum covered in agricultural science courses, and encourages students to learn various methods of forestland management. Along with identification of both hardwood and pine species, team members evaluate sites for best management practices based on environmental factors, analyze plots for future production, product volume and identify plant species and their effects on timber-forage-wildlife relationships. The Daingerfield FFA Forestry team was composed of DJHS eighth grader Rachael Walker, DHS freshmen Riley Zachgo and Elijah Harrison, and DHS senior Salvador Velasquez. They placed sevententh in the state competition out of 56 teams. The Daingerfield FFA Forestry team was coached and trained by DHS agricultural science teacher Kahyon Freeman.
