Tigers swat Hornets, 33-6; meet West Rusk Friday
Prior to a big game, it’s not uncommon for trash talk to bounce back and forth between two teams. It’s also not uncommon for a team to use that talk as motivation. When word got back to the Daingerfield Tigers that some people – whether players, coaches, fans or otherwise – in Hooks believed they struggled in physical football games, the Tigers used a page from the book of Michael Jordan: “....and…took that personally.” In the words of Tigers Quin Webb and Tookie Kelly, “they got to see us all night” to find out how physical the Tigers were. Daingerfield put on a...

Chronic Wasting Disease detected in Cherokee County deer breeding facility
AUSTIN — Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) and Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) received confirmation of a case of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in Cherokee County, marking the first detection in a deer breeding facility in the county. A four-year-old buck tested positive using postmortem testing conducted to meet annual CWD surveillance requirements for the facility. Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory initially analyzed the samples, and the National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Iowa confirmed the CWD detection. CWD has an incubation period that can span years, so the first indication of the disease in a herd is often found through surveillance...

Morris County commissioners join opposition to Marvin Nichols Reservoir
NORTHEAST TEXAS (November 13, 2023) — Morris County Commissioners have unanimously passed a resolution opposing the proposed Marvin Nichols Reservoir. Morris joins both Red River and Cass counties in formalizing their opposition to the project, which has been discussed for decades but has moved closer to development in recent years. “Marvin Nichols would take more than 200,000 acres of private land out of the hands of hardworking Texans,” said Jim Thompson, a member of the Preserve Northeast Texas Steering Committee. “ This reservoir would rob Northeast Texans of land, valuable jobs, and precious water resources, devastating our region’s economy and especially...
Tigers blank Bulldogs, will meet Hooks in area round
After falling just short in a hard-fought battle for the district title last Friday, the Daingerfield Tigers had a short week to prepare for their playoff opener against New Waverly in a bi-district game played in rainy conditions at Henderson’s Lion Stadium. There was no hangover; no heads hung for the missed opportunity. Playoff season is a different animal and the Tigers knew they had a chance at another gold trophy. The Tigers left little doubt in their bi-district round game Thursday as Daingerfield rolled past New Waverly, 48-0. Daingerfield jumped out to a 28-0 lead at halftime, and quarterback Chase Johnson played...

Brahmas finish season with win, miss playoffs due to tiebreaker
Unfortunately, the Pewitt Brahmas held only a portion of their playoff fates in their own hands and needed other results to fall their way even with a win. The Brahmas took care of business in a 42-8 win at home against Chisum, but couldn’t get the district tiebreaker to fall their way for a playoff berth. The Brahmas end their season at 3-7, tied for fourth place with Redwater and New Boston, but the Dragons and Lions claimed the district’s final spots thanks to tiebreakers. Pewitt, celebrating Senior Night, jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and added another...
Tigers fall in district title tilt; open playoffs in Henderson against New Waverly Thursday
Most prognosticators had the season finale between Daingerfield and Harmony pegged as the district title game. Both teams started the year ranked in the top-10 and were picked to occupy the top two district slots in some order. The season began and both teams lost two of their first four against competition that was at least stateranked at the time, with all four teams who gave the Eagles and Tigers their losses (Center and Timpson for Daingerfield; Beckville and Hooks for Harmony) reaching the playoffs in their respective classifications. Three of those four teams finished as district champions; the other (Center)...
Looking for a Shepherd
About eight years ago, a man asked the pastor if he could read a passage from the Psalms to the group under the bridge. He also asked the pastor to help him since his reading skills were poor. This pastor had counseled this man numerous times regarding his addiction and other sins. And the man appeared mentally challenged and had admitted to using meth. What I love is that the man came to church that day. His steps brought him to that moment, as did ours. And we watched the man move to the microphone beside the pastor. Worship songs ended. Birds chirped...

Waterfowl hunters play major role in helping prevent spread of invasive species
AUSTIN – Waterfowl season is on the horizon and as hunters across the state start prepping their gear and boats for opening day, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) reminds them to join the fight against the spread of aquatic invasive species like giant salvinia and zebra mussels. Hunters play a pivotal part in preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species. By taking a few minutes to clean, drain and dry their boats and equipment, including decoys and other hunting gear, before traveling from lake to lake, hunters help keep these species from establishing new homes. Aquatic invasive plants can easily...

We were educated and entertained by Cass County Judge, Travis Ransom. Judge Ransom made us all feel comfortable asking questions while he answered with knowledge and humor. Our November meeting is a community outreach program with the Pleasant Hill Quilters as they present the History of the...
