Autonomous ridesharing effort returns to Dallas
General Motors subsidiary Cruise LLC has expanded manual and supervised driving operations in specific areas in Dallas, marking its return to the city.<\p> Cruise soft-launched its operations in Dallas on June 3 with a small fleet of human-driven cars in Deep Ellum, downtown Dallas, Lower Greenville, the Uptown area and near Dallas Love Field. The effort aims to create maps, prepare its self-driving technology for future driverless services and inform where it will later resume autonomous driving operations.<\p>

Luxury hotel to rise near Lake Grapevine
The developer behind the 160-acre Lakeside Village in Flower Mound has reached an agreement with Marriott International Inc. to bring a luxury hotel that will connect to an office along Lake Grapevine.<\p> Realty Capital Management LLC, the developer behind the $2 billion Lakeside Village development, will bring an Autograph Collection Hotel and Residences. The 12-story, 181-room hotel will also have 21 condos on the top three floors. The hotel's amenities include a rooftop pool, spa, private yacht and a restaurant and bar.<\p>
Cedar Hill has new city manager
The Cedar Hill City Council has unanimously appointed Melissa Valadez-Cummings as its next city manager. <\p> Valadez-Cummings starts her new role on Aug. 1 and succeeds current City Manager Greg Porter, who will step down on July 31 after leading the city for more than three decades.<\p>
What new Uptown tower project means for neighborhood
If you take a stroll around Uptown Dallas or along the Katy Trail, you'll notice two projects along Maple Avenue dramatically reshaping the neighborhood's skyline: the 26-story 23Springs office tower and Crescent Real Estate's neighboring apartment tower.<\p> While both of those projects move closer toward topping out, a more tucked-away project nearby has already added hundreds of thousands of square feet of high-end office space to the market.<\p>
Mavericks-Celtics NBA finals tickets hit record high
Tickets for the NBA Finals are at an all-time high, as the Dallas Mavericks aim to capture an NBA championship against the Boston Celtics.<\p> The average price for the NBA Finals is $4,150 — the most expensive NBA Finals since ticket reseller website TicketIQ began tracking such data in 2011.<\p>
Medical City Children's and Women's Hospital name new CEO
Skyler Reed has been selected as the chief executive officer of Medical City Children’s Hospital and Medical City Women’s Hospital Dallas, according to a June 3 announcement.<\p> Prior to his selection, Reed served as chief operating officer for Medical City Dallas since 2022, where he oversaw multiple services and hospital departments as well as led capital expansion and project development. As COO, he also supported strategic planning and business development, which resulted in the overall focus of advancing patient care and improving satisfaction, according to the announcement.<\p>
Large industrial portfolio at key DFW crossroads sells
A New York-based private equity firm has acquired an eight-building industrial property at a key highway intersection in east Plano near Richardson. <\p> DRA Advisors LLC, a registered investment advisor, purchased the property located northeast of U.S. Highway 75 and President George Bush Turnpike. Most buildings have East Plano Parkway in their address. The industrial portfolio totals 846,261 square feet. <\p>
New $5B accounting giant formed with implications in DFW
Accounting firms Forvis LLP and Mazars Group have finalized their partnership, creating a $5 billion giant in the deal with major impact in Dallas.<\p> Forvis and French giant Mazars initially announced their plans for a combination in November 2023. They announced on June 3 the deal closed, creating a two-member network with more than $5 billion in combined global revenue. Forvis acquired the U.S. unit of Mazars, forming Forvis Mazars LLP as one of the two members. The other member, an international partnership called Forvis Mazars Group SC, operates in more than 100 countries and territories.<\p>
Future of Dallas economy in her capable hands
When incoming Dallas Economic Development Corp. CEO Linda McMahon received a call in November asking if she was interested in the leadership position, her immediate response was "no."<\p> She was too focused on her role as CEO of The Real Estate Council, which was set to launch the next neighborhood focus in its placed-based investment strategy, Dallas Catalyst Project: Mill City, and as vice president of the Dallas EDC's board to think about a different job.<\p>
Galleria Dallas adds concept from popular retailer
A home goods store concept from a well-known clothing company has opened at Galleria Dallas, breathing new life into a section of the four-story mall.<\p> Featuring furniture and home decor at affordable prices, H&M Home opened May 23 at the North Dallas mall right next to its clothing counterpart, H&M. H&M has been a tenant at the Galleria since March 2012.<\p>
Small-business grants you can apply for this month
Despite the seemingly endless number of challenges that come along with being a small-business owner, the vast majority of entrepreneurs recommend it. <\p> A survey of employed adults and small-business owners by Justworks and The Harris Poll earlier this year revealed that 93% of small-business owners would recommend business ownership to others, with 59% saying it was easier than they had anticipated. <\p>
When new pro soccer team will debut at Cotton Bowl
North Texas' new professional women's soccer team has unveiled the schedule for its upcoming inaugural season, including when it makes its debut at the Cotton Bowl Stadium in Fair Park.<\p> Dallas Trinity FC will play its first-ever match in the USL Super League on Aug. 18 on the road in Florida against Tampa Bay Sun FC. Almost three weeks later, the team will make its home debut at the Cotton Bowl on Sept. 7 against DC Power FC.<\p>
Free office space framed as 'game-changer' for Dallas nonprofit
As commercial real estate prices squeeze nonprofits in Dallas, one organization has found a creative solution that provides it with modern and spacious digs — free of charge.<\p> The Business Council for the Arts has a new home within the Deep Ellum headquarters of advertising powerhouse TRG. TRG has agreed to give BCA two offices, cubicle space and collaboration space — about 2,500 square feet in all. That's a small slice of the more than 100,000 square feet TRG leases within The Stack, a 16-story office building of more than 210,000 square feet at 2700 Commerce St. developed by Hines, Westdale Real Estate Investment and Management and Ivanhoé Cambridge.<\p>
More workers are staying with their current employer in 2024
Most U.S. employees are now choosing to stay with their jobs instead of looking for new ones, a sharp turnaround from the job reshuffling that was common during the Covid-19 pandemic. <\p> A new survey by global advisory firm WTW found 72% of employees are choosing to stay with their employer — up substantially from the 53% who said the same thing in 2022. Back then, about 25% of workers were open to job offers, compared to just 11% now.<\p>
Prospective homebuyers are missing out as sellers cut their prices
The chronically troublesome housing market is seeing more price drops, but that doesn’t necessarily translate into relief for homebuyers.<\p> Data from real estate firm Redfin Corp. shows 6.4% of active listings on the platform had a price drop through the week ending May 26. While that's not a massive portion of listings, the percentage is substantially higher than the 4.4% of listings with price drops recorded during the same time in 2023.<\p>

Buc-ee's opening its largest store yet
Lake Jackson-based Buc-ee's Ltd. has completed an expansion of its footprint in Luling, resulting in the travel center chain's largest store in the United States when it opens on June 10.<\p> The announcement comes a little more than two years after the company was approved for incentives to expand the center at 10070 Interstate 10, about 50 miles southeast of downtown Austin. The roughly 75,000-square-foot store replaced the brand's first family travel center that was built in 2003.<\p>
