Jerry Jones 'fed up' with Mike McCarthy before new NFL season has even begun

Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is "fed up" with owner Jerry Jones’ notorious meddling ahead of a crucial season for the franchise.

Following the Cowboys ’ humiliating home blowout loss against the Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round of the NFL playoffs, McCarthy’s future was up in the air. Despite names like Mike Vrabel, Jim Harbaugh, and six-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick available as options, Jones announced that McCarthy would return for next season.

The 60-year-old - who won Super Bowl XLV with the Packers - will coach the Cowboys in 2024 on an expiring contract. Jones believes a head coach can be challenged differently when working on an expiring contract; Jason Garrett twice coached into the final year of his Dallas deal.

However, McCarthy is reportedly frustrated with the front office. Earlier this offseason, Jones declared the NFC East franchise was going "all in", only for contract issues - like for quarterback Dak Prescott - to hang over the Cowboys heading into the 2024 campaign.

“He’s doing it the best he can,” a former Cowboys personnel member told Go Long . “Some of the people I’ve talked to have said that he’s getting fed up with it a little bit.”

The same source expressed sympathy for Prescott’s situation, adding: “It’s hard. I feel bad for Dak. I think Dak’s a really good quarterback who is capable of taking a team to the Super Bowl. He’s got to overcome a lot of things.”

McCarthy's regular season record as the Cowboys head coach is 42-25, a win percentage of 62.7 percent - the highest career win percentage of any coach in team history. He has guided Dallas to two NFC East titles in the past three years, but regular-season success has failed to translate to the playoffs; the Cowboys are 1-3 in the playoffs over his four years at the helm.

Dallas has tallied at least 12 wins for three seasons in a row under McCarthy; the second stretch of such success in franchise history after the 1990s dynasty which won three Super Bowls in four seasons. But postseason success isn’t following this time around, and offseason losses - Tony Pollard to the Titans and Tyler Biadasz to the Commanders - may not help.

Along with Prescott’s future up in the air, McCarthy will be coaching in the final year of his deal and will undoubtedly hang over the Cowboys in 2024. According to to Go Long, “current players are more concerned about Jerry Jones than their own head coach”, which only serves to negatively affect the locker room as the Cowboys look to contend for a Super Bowl for the first time since 1995.
