Klay Thompson’s Dad Breaks Silence After Warriors-Mavericks Trade

Klay Thompson’s run with the Golden State Warriors has come to an end. After four NBA titles and every single season in the NBA with the Warriors, Thompson is joining the Dallas Mavericks after the two sides agreed to a sign-and-trade deal .

Mychal Thompson, Klay's father, shared his feelings on Klay’s new team, and the former Los Angeles Lakers star was not too happy that he didn’t end up in L.A. (h/t Sirius XM NBA Radio).

“I’m not feeling too much in a congratulatory mood right now… I’m really disappointed. I was hoping, hoping, that he would be a Laker. It was close. … You know me. I was hoping and praying that he would finish his career with the Lakers.”

Once it was official that Klay Thompson was leaving Golden State, the Mavericks and Lakers emerged as the two likeliest options for his services.

But, at the end of it all, the Mavericks engineered a deal for him and gave him a three-year, $50 million deal despite the Lakers offering more money and security.

Mychal Thompson admitted he tried to sell Klay on the Lakers when the discussions began:

“Obviously I tried to sell playing for the Lakers. … I really believe in this franchise. The franchise has been so good to me and my family…I thought it seemed like the perfect fit for him to finally come back home. We always talked about him playing for the Lakers. … I’ll live with that. I’ll accept it. … But of course, I tried to sell him on the Lakers.”

At the end of the day, Mychal will be happy for his son, but as of right now, it is a tough pill to swallow not being able to see him don the purple and gold uniform.
