CeeDee Lamb responds to unsolicited training advice from former Cowboys WR Cole Beasley

Dallas Cowboys fans have seen little and heard even less from star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb this offseason as the No. 1 target for Dak Prescott holds out for his contract extension. Footage posted this week on social media of the former Sooner training, however, led to a bristly exchange with former Cowboys receiver Cole Beasley on Friday.

Commenting on the variety of plyometric exercises Lamb did for his explosiveness, Beasley posted: “Man just do some heavy squats and power cleans….” Fans were quick to defend their 1,000+ yard receiver, however, leading the 12-year veteran to backtrack.

“It was more of a shot at all these ‘trainers’ all over Instagram,” he said, adding, “I think Lamb is a baller.”

That’s when the comparisons began. Beasley, who posts on social media often with his various musings, didn’t ignore the replies pointing out that, despite his longevity in the league, he never eclipsed 1,000 yards in a season. The closest he came was in 15 games with the Bills in 2020. He had 967 yards on 82 catches.

“Give me 180 targets off the couch and I eclipse 1000,” Beasley said, responding to a fan. “Stop looking at stats and check the tape. As far as getting open goes…I’m confident I did that with the best of them.”

That comment found its way to Lamb and the former first-round pick couldn’t resist.

“I don’t need 180 targets to touch a band,” Lamb said. “Pull up tape, I’d match you route for route on getting open. Just Chill. @Bease11.”

Beasley ended the exchange: “it was never shots at you bro don’t be sensitive.”

Deuce Vaughn studying Beasley’s tape

CeeDee Lamb may not be interested in Beasley’s advice, but there’s one Cowboys player who is incorporating the former slot receiver’s tape into his preparation for the season. Cowboys second-year running back Deuce Vaughn opened up at OTAs about working with the wide receivers and growing his game. Though he’s not with the receivers every day or even most days, the former Kansas State star told reporters this week he’s doing whatever the team wants so that he can add value.

Among Vaughn’s techniques for improving in the receiving game are working with Brandin Cooks and studying Beasley’s tape. The 5-foot-6 running back sees a lot he can model from Beasley (5-foot-8) who played for Dallas for seven seasons and caught more than 300 passes.

“When I went upstairs and started watching guys, the guy I was watching was Cole Beasley,” Vaughn said. “Not a big guy in prowess but he understood. His IQ of the game, seeing coverages, being able to sit down in zones and understanding how to beat leverage is unreal. He’s one of the guys I’ve watched a whole bunch.”

In seven games last season, Vaughn had 23 carries for 40 yards, as well as seven catches for 40 yards. For added value, he also had four punt return attempts.
