It was announced by the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday evening that star guard Kyrie Irving had undergone surgery to repair a broken left hand. In their official announcement ( h/t Marc Stein ), Dallas wrote the following:

"The Dallas Mavericks announced today that Kyrie Irving has undergone surgery to repair a broken left hand. He sustained the injury earlier this month while training. Further medical updates on Irving's status will be provided as appropriate."

In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Irving broke his silence on this unexpected news, saying this is now an opportunity for him to get a break from training:

"Tribe, Thank you for all the messages and prayers," Irving wrote to his fans. "GOD truly knew that I needed to take a break from Basketball after the long season and give myself some time to heal. I am in love with getting better at my craft, but now I must rest and recover."

Irving started 58 games for the Mavericks last season before starting all 22 postseason games. A big reason why Dallas was able to make an NBA Finals run, Irving found his way alongside Luka Doncic, as the duo worked through some of their early struggles from last season.

It was reported by ESPN's Tim MacMahon that Irving is expected to make a full recovery by the start of next season, which is great news. In a post on X, MacMahon wrote, "A team source expressed optimism that Kyrie Irving would recover in time to participate in training camp."
