Kyrie Irving suffered a broken left hand earlier this month while training, and has undergone successful surgery to repair the injury, according to Shams Charania .

"Mavericks say Kyrie Irving has undergone surgery to repair a broken left hand. He sustained the injury earlier this month while training."

Irving has reacted to the news being made public, sharing a message on social media thanking fans for their support before saying he needed this rest after a long season.

"Tribe, Thank you for all the messages and prayers. God truly knew that I needed to take a break from Basketball after the long season and give myself some time to heal. I am in love with getting better at my craft, but now I must rest and recover."

Irving averaged 25.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 5.2 assists in the regular season, helping the Mavericks to 50 wins before playing an instrumental role in their run to the NBA Finals. Irving averaged 22.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 5.1 assists in the Playoffs, proving his partnership with Luka Doncic can be successful despite both being on-ball offensive guards.

Irving suffered a variety of injuries at the start of the season, recovering from injuries to his foot and thumb before finding consistent good health through the latter half of the season. The Mavericks went 16-2 to close the season with Irving in the lineup, with his contributions allowing the Mavs to have the success they did last season.

The 32-year-old guard has been injury-prone in recent years of his career but will hope that the offseason allows him to heal up before a crucial 2024-25 season where the Mavericks will hope to compete for an NBA Championship once again.

Kyrie Irving Thinks The Mavericks Can Return To The NBA Finals

The Mavericks lost five games through three Playoff series wins in the 2024 NBA Playoffs before being dispatched in five games by the Celtics in the NBA Finals. Irving had expressed his confidence in the team's ability to return to that stage next year immediately after their season ended.

"Very confident [in the team's future]. That's one positive that we can take from this series, just how far we made it and how proud I am of the guys. We answered a lot of questions this year on what we're capable of doing. Now it's just about being consistent. I think, probably in the last week, I said that I wanted [us] to be remembered as one of the best teams of this era."

The Mavericks have made major moves to improve their roster ahead of next season. They swapped out Tim Hardaway Jr. for Quentin Grimes after THJ fell out of the rotation in the Playoffs, also signing Naji Marshall in free agency as a replacement for the outgoing Derrick Jones Jr.

The team's marquee signing was Irving's old NBA Finals rival Klay Thompson , who was acquired through a sign-and-trade that sent Josh Green to the Charlotte Hornets. Given the additional skill sets joining the franchise, the Mavericks will feel confident they've improved their roster enough to keep pace in a challenging West.

No Western Conference Champion has defended their crown since the Warriors in 2019, so the Mavericks will hope their group led by Doncic and Irving can make it happen in the 2024-25 season.
