Spencer Dinwiddie returns to Mavericks on one-year deal

Free agent point guard Spencer Dinwiddie is returning to the Dallas Mavericks on a one-year deal, NBA insider Shams Charania of The Athletic first reported Monday. He spent portions of both the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons with Dallas before getting shipped to Brooklyn in the Kyrie Irving trade ahead of the 2023 deadline.

Dinwiddie averaged 10.5 points, 2.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists with the Nets and Los Angeles Lakers last season, though he was very inefficient. He shot just 39.2 percent from the floor and 33.7 percent from 3-point range on 4.8 attempts per game.

In 76 combined games with the Mavericks from 2021-23, he posted 17.1 points, 3.1 boards and 4.9 assists per game on 46.6/40.4/78.8 shooting splits, though he racked up a 22.0 usage rate alongside Luka Doncic . That’s not going to be the case with Irving in the fold. Nevertheless, the Mavericks do lack true guard depth behind the Irving-Doncic pairing, making this an ideal fit.

Dinwiddie’s contract will be for the minimum; he will make $3.0 minimum since he has nine years of service time, but will only be on the books for $2.1 minimum, according to Spotrac.

Did Klay Thompson reject more money from Lakers to join Mavericks?

You would hope that the 31-year-old has a bounce-back season after having played for four different organizations over the last three seasons. That’s what the reigning West champs are banking on, for better or worse, hoping that Dinwiddie can provide some secondary creation off the bench.

The Mavericks are hard-capped below the $178 million first apron as a result of acquiring Klay Thompson via a sign-and-trade, which it sent guard Josh Green to the Charlotte Hornets. They have a full 15-man roster and two of their three two-ways ( Brandon Williams , Alex Fudge ) filled while being less than $500K away from the apron.
