As if 2024 hasn’t already given Texans their fair share of extreme weather: Officials say late Monday night three earthquakes, including a magnitude 4.9, rocked parts of The Lone Star State.

The earthquakes were registered near the town of Hermleigh, nearly 60 miles northwest of Abilene, at 10:38 p.m., 10:46 p.m. and 11:56 p.m., according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey. Despite the epicenter being some 200 miles away from North Texas, some aftershocks were reported in the Dallas/Forth Worth area.

For those keeping score, Monday’s quake is tied for the 8th strongest to impact Texas in recorded history. It’s tied with the magnitude 4.9 earthquake that occurred near Loving, NM on July 21, 2022.

Historically, earthquakes have been recorded in nearly all parts of Texas, but West Texas is one of a few clusters where they are more likely to occur.
