Jerry Jones Has Two-Word Reply To Why Mike McCarthy’s Deal Wasn’t Extended

Much has been made over the last few months about Mike McCarthy heading into a lame-duck year as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys in 2024.

He’s led the team to three straight 12-5 seasons with three playoff appearances and three division titles, but still that wasn’t enough to warrant a contract extension this offseason. And the reason he didn’t get said extension? Well, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones answered that in two words.

“Green Bay,” Jones said during the first news conference of Cowboys training camp on Thursday.

Of course, he’s referring to January’s embarrassing 48-32 playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers at AT&T Stadium in the wild-card round of the playoffs.

It was the Cowboys worst home playoff loss in nearly three decades and it was the eighth time they were one-and-done in the playoffs since 1995, the last time the team made it past the divisional round. It was also the second time in three seasons Dallas had lost to a lower-seeded team in the postseason.

But while McCarthy is only under contract for one more season, that doesn’t mean he can’t earn a contract extension this year. In fact, Jones looks at the 2024 season as McCarthy’s chance to rise to the occasion and make Jones offer him a long-term deal.

“I don’t agree [he’s a lame-duck coach],” Jones added. “I understand the term and I understand how it fits. I don’t look at it that way.”
